It might take awhile before our grand plans for a vacation in Japan can come to fruition. In the meantime, if you’re trying to satiate your cravings, we’ve got options aplenty. The newly opened Oishi Boru might find itself on the top of your ‘to-visit’ list, serving up the popular Japanese fusion street snacks such as boru and sushi bakes.
Despite its recent addition to the bustling Somerset area, Oishi Boru has been a household name for halal Japanese fare as a home-based business. They even won Best Takoyaki in the Halal Awards 2020, so you know that you’re getting a solid bang for your buck.
Oishi Boru offers balls with various fillings across both surf and turf—fans of Japanese street snacks can expect teriyaki chicken, prawn mentaiko, spicy beef, and even mozzarella bolognese in their wheat battered snacks. It’s a unique rendition that deviates from the typical minced or diced octopus in the takoyaki that we’re all used to, but I’m personally down to give it a shot.
This borus come in different sets—Personal Borus (S$6.90 for six pieces), Upsized Borus (S$13.60 for 12 pieces), Teaser Platter (S$39.60 for 35 pieces). This way you’ll get a chance to sample all the flavours at one go, and who knows? Maybe you’d prefer fusion boru over traditional octopus takoyaki.
Oishi Boru also offers the trendy sushi bakes that have been flooding social media explore pages. A sushi bake is a deconstructed, layered sushi that’s baked like a casserole. It retains all the usual elements of sushi—seasoned Japanese rice and typical ingredients—just that it’s heated in the oven before you dig in. Each Personal Tray will set you back S$11.50, and comes in three flavours of California, Salmon Teriyaki, and Garlic Butter Prawns.
