Residents and food lovers all over, you will be delighted by this news. Arguably, one of Singapore’s most famous hawker centres, Old Airport Road Food Centre, is set to reopen after a 4-month extended closure due to renovation works.
As announced last Wednesday in a Facebook post by Mountbatten MP Lim Biow Chuan, “the work is progressing well” and the hawker centre is scheduled to reopen on 1 Oct.
Since its inception in 1973, Old Airport Road Food Centre has made a name for itself as most people’s go-to hawker centre. With 168 stalls, it is Singapore’s second-largest hawker centre behind Chinatown Complex Food Centre.
Before the renovation, Old Airport Road Food Centre experienced a reduction in the number of diners due to immense competition. This drove a higher turnover rate with vendors.
New revamps to the hawker centre include replacing and renovating all indoor and outdoor tables, stools, fans, lights, and toilets. Vendors remain optimistic that these change will bring an improvement to their businesses, preserving the hawker centre’s legacy.
Diners can look forward to enjoying familiar favourite stalls such as Xiang Ji Lor Mee, Whitley Road Big Prawn Noodle and Nam Sing Hokkien Fried Mee, among others. According to the National Environment Agency (NEA), renovation works will not affect stall prices. As such, diners can hopefully savour favourites at the same prices they did before the renovation.
If you are as excited as I am by this news, mark your calendars for 1 Oct and head down to the new and improved Old Airport Road Food Centre!
