Has anyone realised that no one really waits for the actual day of Mid-Autumn Festival to eat mooncakes and rather, gives and receives mooncake gift boxes up to three months in advance? Regardless of why and how, all I know is that there will most definitely be early bird promotions, exciting new flavours and exceptional gift boxes. Best to get them soon too since popular boxes and flavours run out fast!
There’s no escaping the plethora of hotels, bakeries and restaurants advertising their products. To make things succinct and straightforward before Mid-Autumn Festival 2022, here is a mini guide to the prettiest gift boxes with novelty mooncakes that are simply perfect to send to loved ones, superiors, in-laws and basically… anyone.

1. Mdm Ling Bakery
I won’t lie— I was mad thrilled when I heard about the exclusive collaboration between Mdm Ling Bakery and Hasbro, specifically the world-renowned game, Monopoly.
To top it off, the partnership commemorates Mid-Autumn Festival 2022 which means limited-time only mooncakes with a special edition board game. I mean, this has got to be the ultimate mooncake gift box, right?
The Monopoly Street Smart Mooncake Game Box (S$118) is the first of its kind in the world and perhaps the only board game that comes with traditional mooncakes. Yes, the box itself transforms into a game board and comes with the full works— chance cards, paper money and tokens. A thoughtful initiative to be more environmentally friendly to make the box purposeful.
Every gift box comes with 4 collectible Monopoly tins, each with a mooncake encased within. Choose from five different flavour series curated by the team for the ultimate Mid-Autumn Festival experience. Use the tins as you will to keep the game pieces!
Just think about it: this is quite easily the perfect mooncake box to give to loved ones, in-laws, families with children, colleagues and more.
My personal favourite flavours were the Peanut Sesame Paste (far right). It was not too dry nor rich and had the perfect balance of black sesame to peanut to make it a lovely tea snack. It’s also part of the brand new DESSERTLICIOUS! Nostalgic Series, which comes with Longan Dan Feng Tea, Orange Peel Red Bean, and Osmanthus Goji Berries.
As someone who fancies new, one-of-a-kind and earthy flavours, the YUMMYLICIOUS! Cookie-Inspired Series is one to keep your eyes out for. Unearth Japanese Purple Sweet Potato (pictured left), Cranberry Florentine Assorted Nuts, Savoury Chicken Floss (say what!) and Salted Mung Bean, is one you’re going to want to add to cart and gift it to a close family and friends who matter, and don’t mind a cheeky treat. These flavours were also inspired by some of Mdm Ling Bakery’s best selling snacks!
For Halal or Vegetarian options, the LUSCIOUS! Traditional Classic Series and LAVALICIOUS! Signature Series are just the combinations for you, so these are also good for those who need to give mooncakes to corporate clients to ensure inclusivity.
What I love about Mdm Ling Bakery’s mooncake collection is the attention to detail with their gift boxes. In case you prefer something more traditional instead of the Monopoly gift set, the established bakery has got the award-winning Imperial Chinese Chess Mooncake Gift Box (S$98). Fun fact: it won Sales & Display Product Category at the 2021 Singapore Packaging Star Awards.
If you’re still lingering on the thought, here’s another reason why you really shouldn’t ponder further. Enjoy 25% off when you purchase three mooncake Game Boxes or 20% off with one or two boxes, from now till 15 August 2022.
Plus, stand to claim a free gift with a minimum spend of S$120 on mooncakes with promo code <MLBSETHMAF2022> from now until 7 August 2022, limited to the first 200 redemptions!
There’s almost no doubt in my mind this will be the mooncake gift box I’m sending to friends or colleagues with children. An immensely creative way of etching a purpose to keep the gift box instead of recycling it. There’s no time to waste— order your mooncakes for Mid-Autumn Festival 2022 here!
2. La Levain
By now, you’ve probably heard of La Levain, helmed by Chef Wythe Ng, WGA Baker of the Year finalist. From artisanal cakes and bakes, whether sweet or savoury, the humble bakery along Hamilton Road is to bring us artisanal mooncakes— all made in-house!
I had the honour of trying the Liqueur Truffle Snowskin Mooncake (S$82) box, with eight vibrant handmade mooncakes within.
Every box comes with four special flavours, with two of each truffle snowskin flavours, namely Raspberry Liqueur, Japanese Sudachi, Boozy Yuzu Apple and Boozy Apricot Passion Fruit.
Even before I gave the mooncakes a taste, I just knew it was going to be good. First impressions matter and I was certainly convinced by the look of La Levain’s snowskin mooncakes. One bite and you can trust that these gems are made with quality ingredients and liqueurs.
I loved how the flavours were more modern and trendy, with special appearances from premium ingredients such as yuzu and Valrhona dark chocolate. While they are on the sweeter side, I adored the immaculate pairing of flavours within each mooncake.
MVP of the box would go to the Raspberry Liqueur, with the tart raspberry flavour perfectly complementing the rich mung bean cream cheese and Valrhona Raspberry Crunchy Pearls filling, and a white chocolate truffle shell with Crème de Framboise, although all were equally stunning on its own.
La Levain also has a fusion baked Teochew mooncake range too, with unique flavours such as Molten Salted Egg, Earl Grey Latte and Bobo Chacha Mochi. The latter is inspired by La Levain’s signature Bobo Chacha Croissant, just elevated to new heights to bring you a sweet velvety taro pumpkin almond cream filling with a fragrant coconut mochi center. Made in-house with premium Lescure butter, these mooncakes all have that light buttery pastry that melts in your mouth.
With early bird promotions going at 25% off when you order yours here, while stocks last! I’d say this makes for the ultimate box if you’re looking to embrace fancy and impress many.
Readers can either order online or direct in their store at 23 Hamilton Road. You might even want to add on your favourite bakes together with your Mid-Autumn Festival 2022 order because, why not?
3. JU Signatures
If you’re looking for mooncakes with a touch of luxe and history, JU Signatures Teochew orh nee mooncakes will do just the trick.
With over two decades of experience, Executive Dim Sum Chef Wong Kok Shyong is well-known in the industry for his Teochew orh nee mooncakes. He was previously the Group Dim Sum Chef in an award-winning restaurant well-known for Teochew mooncakes too.
Made in-house with no preservatives and only natural colouring, these are rare to find during the Mid-Autumn season because of its tedious craft and labour intensity. Trust me, it’s a real challenge finding these outside due to the amount of time and effort. Just look at how flaky the mooncakes are in the JUbilance (S$78) box!
Of the four orh nee flavours, the Matcha Mochi Lava intrigued me the most. The flaky exterior was already hard work on its own and the team decides to challenge that and do a matcha lava filling? Brilliant.
The matcha filling held light bitter notes and an earthy richness. Paired together with the smooth, semi-sweet orh nee paste and it was bliss.
Now, the Flaky Teochew Pumpkin Orh Nee Single Yolk came close to being first place. Call it what you will but I must give high praise to Chef Wong’s version. It was sensational and incredibly reminiscent of the OG Teochew dessert— just in a baked form.
The mild saltiness from the egg yolk complemented the sweetness of the pumpkin and orh nee and rounded each bite delightfully.
It’s worth noting that one mooncake can easily be shared between two to three pax. With all four masterpieces decked in a crimson red box, this is one I’d recommend specifically for parents, in-laws, and bosses. Wink.
Plus, don’t forget to get them while the early bird promotion of up to 20% off is on for a limited time only. Order your exquisite box of mooncakes on their website, or direct from the restaurant at 4 Maju Avenue while you enjoy a hearty dim sum meal and you’ll be all aboard euphoria express.
