Oriental Kopi: Serving award-winning 128-layer egg tart & tangy mee siam

I remember when Oriental Kopi first opened in Kuala Lumpur in 2021, the buzz was real. There are now 4 outlets but even today, the queue (especially on the weekends) is simply endless. What is it about this coffee shop that has hundreds of customers queuing up for hours for a table?

I visited the Bandar Puteri, Puchong outlet for lunch and even at 11am on a weekday, there was already a small queue. The moment I stepped foot into the coffee shop, I was greeted by a modern yet traditional interior design with soft old-school Chinese music playing in the background.

On the right, next to the cashier, are endless rows of display counters filled with freshly-baked egg tarts. Just the view of the golden brown tops was enough to stop me dead in my tracks.

The egg tarts gleamed like sunflowers on a tray, the caramelised sugar kissing their edges brown. This is the pride and joy of Oriental Kopi and every table at the coffee shop had a plate of these golden goodies.

What I tried at Oriental Kopi

Oriental Kopi may be known for their egg tarts but their Oriental Fried Chicken Meat Mee Siam (RM15.90) was clearly the second most popular dish there. I noticed that plates of their mee siam were flying out of the kitchen, and I knew I had to try a plate.

There was a small rectangular sheet of banana leaf at the bottom and on top were slices of fresh cucumber, lime, a generous amount of sambal, chunks of freshly fried chicken thigh, vermicelli noodles, and to top it all off, a perfectly-poached egg.

Hold on a minute, a poached egg on top of mee siam? This was definitely new to me.

I pierced my fork gently into the extremely delicate egg white and out oozed the gorgeous golden yolk all over the vermicelli noodles— oh, how my mouth watered. I gave the noodles a generous toss with the creamy egg yolk and took a huge bite.

The mee siam by itself hit all the right notes— tangy, slightly sweet and deeply savoury. The poached egg gave the noodles a creamy taste and the lime gave the noodles an extra tangy kick. The deep fried chicken thigh by itself was good, juicy and just perfectly salted but when paired with the mee siam, it was luscious.

I didn’t care much for the sambal. It wasn’t sweet or spicy, it had a very mild taste— if you don’t like your sambal to be spicy, then you’ll enjoy it along with the noodles.

Dessert - egg tart

Mee siam gobbled down, my attention focused towards the 2 of their Signature Egg Tarts (RM9.80) placed in front of me.

Just from their appearance, I deduced that these weren’t your average egg tarts they suspiciously reminded me more of Portugese egg tarts because of the caramelised crusts.

Before I get into the taste test, a little fun fact about these golden sweets. Oriental Kopi’s egg tarts are so popular that it’s made it to the Malaysian Book of Records for having the thickest crust, 128 layers or 6mm.

Pastry - egg tart

I eagerly sliced the egg tart into half and it revealed a golden, custard-like filling—- it was like finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. At first, I thought the amount of eggy filling would initially throw me off, but I was wrong. The filling was very light, not overly creamy and the egg wasn’t overpowering. Each mouthful was packed with goodness and an aromatic hint of the egg custard taste.

I particularly enjoyed the flaky outer pastry. Oriental Kopi uses premium French butter and bakes their egg tart under really high temperatures to ensure it becomes really flaky and crispy.

Plus, the 128-layers separates Oriental Kopi’s egg tarts from your usual egg tarts, it makes the egg tart extremely crunchy. I preferred this crust over the usually crumbly shell and despite having so many layers, it was very light tasting. Last but not least, the many layers also gave the egg tart its height— no wonder it got into the Malaysian Book of Records!

But after devouring one whole tart, I couldn’t find myself reaching for more even though I had found it really tasty. The size of one itself was huge enough to satisfy my egg tart cravings.

Final thoughts

Oriental Kopi - food

As I walked out of the restaurant, I couldn’t help but notice that there was still a queue. Despite being in Malaysia for more than a year, I was impressed that the hype for Oriental Kopi was still very much there. But in my opinion, the hype was well-deserved.

If you ever pass by Oriental Kopi, do stop and grab a box (or 2) of their Signature Egg Tarts for teatime. It’s that good.
