Life is unpredictable— a lot can happen in a span of 4 months. Why am I suddenly saying this, you may ask? Well, in Nov 2023, I had just visited Cindy from Penang Taste at the food court of Sultan Plaza. However, I was taken aback when I saw someone on the Can Eat! SG Facebook group posting about the closure of her stall.

Penang Taste was originally setup in 2022 by 2 native Penang sisters, Cindy and Celine. However, due to health issues, Celine had to step away from the stall, leaving Cindy to handle the business by herself.

These days, we all read about various F&B establishments closing down due to retirement, health issues or rental hikes. Curious about why the stall is up for rent, I messaged her on WhatsApp.

“Yes, I closed my stall on 15 Feb 2024, after getting burnt on 31 Jan,” Cindy replied.

She has returned back to Penang to seek treatment for her scalding. When I asked about the severity of her injuries, she sent me a photo which scared me senseless. Massive air bubbles covered her legs and ankles, leaving me to imagine the pain she endured during that time.

Cindy explained that at 9am, she had just finished cooking a batch of soup and was preparing to open the stall. Unaware that one of the handles of the new stock pot she had bought just a week ago was already faulty, she carried it to store it at the side. That was when disaster struck—  the hot soup landed on both her feet.

“How did she even manage to move around?” I thought to myself.

She added, “I cried everyday and had to take painkillers.”

Cindy is currently feeling much better and is focused on recovery. Once her injuries have subsided, she intends to return to Singapore and find another hawker stall.

I was shocked when she told me that she didn’t confront the people which sold her the pot. I’m enraged and curious about the whereabouts of this kitchenware stall, which Cindy mentioned is nearby Sultan Plaza (does anyone know of any?).

We sincerely wish Cindy a speedy recovery and that she takes all the time necessary to recuperate. We look forward to welcoming her back when she opens her Penang food stall again in the near future.
