Oftentimes, high tea has close relations to the notion of ladies of leisure and an activity that is mainly catered to the fairer sex. Well, it is about high time that food isn’t associated with gender roles—after all, it’s 2021—and so, it’s a pleasure to have Prego introduce a Gentlemen’s Tea that sees an Italian-influenced presentation of larger bites and even a single pour of whisky.
The tea session takes place exclusively every last Friday of the month (3pm – 5pm), and will set you back S$68++, with a choice of TWG tea or coffee and a glass of Scotch Single Malt whisky Glenmorangie Lasanta. Call me a simpleton, but one of the bites I enjoyed most was Coronation Chicken, Rye, a chicken-mayonnaise open-faced bite on rye bread. It brings back to my childhood of tuna-mayonnaise sandwiches, and sometimes, all we need is comfort food.
Another one to look out for is Stanbroke Minute Steak, Chimichurri, Sourdough. While the portion is no larger than the size of my palm, the flavours dance on the palate. Wash every nibble down with a polite sip of Scotch Single Malt whisky Glenmorangie Lasanta, a silky tipple that complements every element of the tea set.
A unique feature of this Gentlemen’s Tea is a full-portion serving of Baked Beef Pie—hearty enough for this mid-day treat to be a complete meal. The crust flakes off like feathers to reveal a peppery shredded beef filling that’s earthy and rich. In spite of its name, the Gentlemen’s Tea is for everyone—not just men—which means I now have a high tea option that doesn’t just rely on dainty bites. Because what’s the point of eating, if not to be satiated?
Here, the Scone, Apple Chutney deviates from the English standard of clotted cream and jam. I’ve only ever enjoyed my scones one way, so it was a challenge for me to appreciate apple chutney in place of sweet-tangy jam and delightful cream. Also, the scones’ texture leaned more towards sponge cake, so it might not be everyone’s cup of tea.
As someone with an insatiable sweet tooth, I was most looking forward to the Bitter Chocolate Cigars. Constructed much like cannoli, these chocolate cigars are piped with dark chocolate ganache that’s sexy and bold—the very makings of a gentleman. I recommend using your hands for a better bite, and you’ll be rewarded with a gratifying crumble of wafer against luxurious chocolate.
I left Prego surprisingly stuffed, something I rarely experience after high tea sessions. It’s refreshing to have a high tea offering that’s packed with larger portions and shares the spotlight with appealing savouries. Be sure to bring that special man—or woman—in your life, especially if they’ve turned their noses, prior, to the miniature portions that traditional high teas serve. This one’s for the true foodies, and I’m confident there’s plenty of you out there.
