Residents of Punggol will soon have another veritable food paradise at their doorstep. Along with the soft opening of Punggol Coast Mall, a brand new hawker centre with 40 stalls and more than 680 seats is scheduled to open in the first half of 2025, along with Bukit Batok’s first hawker centre. It will be located at 84 Punggol Way.
Originally slated to open in the second half of 2024, this new hawker centre is part of a national initiative to build new hawker centres and upgrade existing ones that show signs of age. The Punggol Coast Hawker Centre is under the management of Kopitiam, which is part of the FairPrice Group. A call for stall applications began on 3 Feb 2025, and will run until 16 Mar 2025. Operations are expected to begin sometime in June or July 2025.
Punggol Coast and Bukit Batok won’t be the only estates getting new hawker centres – another 5 more are scheduled to be built in new and existing estates. The exact locations of these centres are not known at this time.
These new centres are part of the Hawker Centres Upgrading Programme 2.0. The first version of this programme took place over 20 years ago, and saw about 100 hawker centres either upgraded, or rebuilt.
The Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE) and the National Environment Agency (NEA) plan to invest up to S$1 billion in the programme over the next 2 to 3 decades.
Other initiatives will include optimisation of the space to make them more accessible, and exploring solutions to reduce ambient temperatures to make the hawker centres more comfortable. Several hawker centres in mature estates may need to be rebuilt entirely, and both agencies are working to identify these.
