RSMY Best Cheese Naan: Sink your teeth into the goodness of gooey cheese naan

Growing up, my go-to dish at any Indian or mamak restaurant would always be naan bread with a side of tandoori chicken. It’s soft, fluffy with crispy edges, and truly my definition of comfort food. I’ve also noticed that throughout the years, the humble naan has undergone flavour evolution beyond its original plain version. And the one that has been making headlines repeatedly is the cheese naan. So I’ve gone to the source of the supposed best cheese naan in KL— RSMY Best Cheese Naan

RSMY Best Cheese Naan - restaurant

With 4 outlets in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, RSMY Best Cheese Naan has been the go-to place for foreigners and locals alike to satisfy their cheese cravings. I visited their Jalan Medan Tuanku outlet (the most popular outlet) and thankfully got a seat immediately, despite the dinner rush.

What I tried at RSMY Cheese Naan

Though they have over 5 different types of naan, their best-seller and crowd favourite would have to be the original Cheese Naan (RM11). I couldn’t resist adding more cheese to the dish which meant the Cheese Naan chalked up to a hefty RM16. This is definitely a pretty steep price for carbohydrates stuffed with boatloads of cheese.

RSMY Best Cheese Naan - cheese naan

The cheese naan served here is a very simple recipe comprising a ball of mozzarella cheese wrapped in naan dough, and baked in the traditional tandoor oven, resulting in a less oily texture and sweeter flavour. Since the cheese is placed in the centre of the dough before cooking, it evenly melts and fills the entire naan.

Within a few minutes, the cheese naan arrived on the table, piping hot and cut into triangular shapes, very much like a pizza. But what really got my mouth watering is that legendary, much sought after, jaw-dropping cheese pull. Every delightful bite involves tearing, stretching and chewing the elastic flatbread amid a delicate milky flavour.

The cheese naan was absolutely stunning— super soft and had a slightly mild and salty flavour. I personally felt that each cheesy slice was delicious on its own, curry or dhal is not needed. However, for those of you who do need a side of gravy, the downside of the cheese naan served here is that it doesn’t come with it. You are required to purchase the gravy separately. For RM16, I was expecting to be served that much at least.

Sate 7 Pagi: Juicy satay & piping hot nasi lemak for your 7am breakfast fix

To complement my naan, I opted for these sides: Beef Keema (RM12) and Chicken Tandoori (RM12). To my dismay, the Chicken Tandoori was sold out for the day. The waiter eagerly suggested the Kambing Kerayi (RM22), which I admittedly felt rather hesitant about as I’m rather picky about mutton. However, he was rather persuasive (and I’m relieved that he was)!

RSMY - mutton dish

Initially a sceptic of the Kambing Kerayi, I took one bite of the mutton and immediately fell in love with its taste. I suspect that the mutton here is slow-cooked in gravy, which explains its tender texture and strong flavours. The aromatic masala and tender juicy mutton meat chunks clubbed together tasted so flavourful. I discovered that the mutton is sourced locally and nothing frozen is used at this stall.

The gravy reminded me of a meaty dhal which I happily mopped up with the cheese naan. This combination surprised me. Even my dining companion, who doesn’t usually consume mutton, polished her plate clean.

RSMY - keema

As for the Beef Keema, visually the dish did not appear very enticing. Tearing off a piece from the cheese naan, I dipped it in the saucy keema, scooped up some minced meat and popped all of it into my mouth. I enjoyed the meaty texture but I wished the dish was more flavourful. I’ve definitely had far better keema and would recommend you go for the mutton instead.

Final thoughts

RSMY Best Cheese Naan - dishes

It was almost 10pm when we got done with our meal, but there was still an influx of customers at the restaurant. From students to families and foreigners, it’s no surprise that the tasty reputation of RSMY Best Cheese Naan has travelled far and wide. A must order is the Kambing Kerayi. Yes, I admit it’s quite pricey for 3 small chunks of mutton but it’s so tender and flavourful, you wouldn’t want to miss it.

A point to note is that it’s best to share your cheese naan with a friend otherwise all that cheese can get rather overwhelming. Plus, it’s always good to share the calories, isn’t it? I’ll conclude by saying that RSMY Best Cheese Naan definitely lives up to its tagline, the ”best cheese naan”.
