If you’re not a fan of nasi kandar, chances are you just haven’t tasted the right one yet. In fact, I’d argue you haven’t truly experienced nasi kandar until you’ve visited Hameediyah Masjid India.
Crowned as the oldest nasi kandar establishment in Malaysia — and quite possibly the world — Hameediyah’s story stretches back more than a century. Officially founded in Penang in 1907, its roots trace to 1867 when M. Mohamed Thamby Rawther, a spice trader from Chittarkottai, Tamil Nadu, arrived in Penang with his 3 sons: Seeni Packeer Rawther, Packeer Mohamed Rawther, and Abdul Ghaney Rawther.
Back then, spice traders roamed the streets with their goods balanced on kandar, which is a wooden pole slung over the shoulder with pots hanging on each end. It was from these very pots that Mohamed Thamby began serving rice and curry with hard-boiled eggs — sliced the traditional way, using thread. And so, nasi kandar was born.
Each generation since has added its own spice to the legacy. Their heritage proudly lines the wall in portraits of forefathers who kept the flame (and the recipes) alive.
With 3 long standing branches in Penang and 3 more in Kuala Lumpur: Bukit Bintang, Ampang, and the latest at Semua House Mall, the Rawther family continues to expand their culinary legacy.
Each branch carries the same legendary spirit as the original. Yes, even the newly opened Semua House outlet, which I had the pleasure of visiting. What makes this possible is the brand’s unwavering passion for storytelling. Woven into every detail, from the history-laden murals to the decor that strikes a perfect balance between modern chic and timeless tradition.
What sets Hameediyah apart is their unwavering commitment to quality. Only premium ingredients make the cut, and all spices are freshly ground. The result is a plate of nasi kandar that’s unforgettable and as good as the original. Their attention to detail extends all the way to the drinks menu— freshly crafted at their very own in-house drink bar.
What I tried at Hameediyah Masjid India
At Hameediyah Masjid India, the menu tempts with more than just nasi kandar. Nevertheless, I knew I had to start with the classic to taste their signature magic. Enter the Nasi Kandar Ayam Bawang (RM14): a generous mound of fluffy rice bathed in kuah campur, topped with a hard-boiled egg, tender okra, and creamy sambal nyok (coconut sambal).
The star of the show was undeniably the deep-fried chicken slow-braised for 90 minutes in sweet, caramelised onions.
The rice was honestly perfect on its own — flavourful from the curry and subtly sweet from the kuah kicap. A dash of heat from the sambal and a crunch of crispy shallots turned every bite into a delightful medley of textures and flavours.
With my palate fully awakened by the bold, authentic taste of the nasi kandar, I was more than ready to dive into the ever-popular Lamb Shank (RM45).
The meat was fall-off-the-bone tender. It was so soft it barely clung to the fork. The rich gravy had seeped deep into the lamb, creating layers of flavour in every bite. And for those wary of red meat’s gaminess, rest assured. Hameediyah’s take is refined, aromatic, and free from any unpleasant aftertaste.
The culinary excellence continued with the next 2 impressive dishes: the Sotong Goreng Viral Crispy (RM25 for 100g) and Tiger Prawn Crispy (RM35).
The squid, lightly battered in fragrant curry-based spices, was fried to a golden crisp. Raisins, red cherries, and almond flakes were also fried alongside the tender squid. This unexpected combo brought a sweet-tart balance and a satisfying mouthfeel that cleverly cut through the richness of the dish.
Then came the tiger prawn which was an absolute showstopper. Massive, juicy, and coated in the same aromatic spice mix, it exploded with flavour at first bite. The shell was crisp enough to be enjoyed whole, adding an extra layer of crunch.
And then, a return to the classics with what quickly became my personal favourite: the Beef Murtabak (RM13.50). Generously stuffed with savoury, tender beef, each bite was a warm embrace of spices. Paired with tangy pickled red onions and rich dalcha curry, it was nothing short of heavenly.
If you’re after a hearty, carb-loaded dish perfect for sharing, look no further than my 2nd favourite: the Mix Platter (RM44). This generous set comes with juicy, well-seasoned chicken and lamb kebabs, boldly spiced chicken tikka, dates, olives, pickled onions, crispy French fries, and a side of tangy salsa.
The platter is served with 2 types of naan — black seed and sesame seed — each perfect for scooping up the delicious bits. Tear off a warm piece, stack it with chicken, lamb, olives, onions, and your dip of choice, and you’ve got yourself a bite worth remembering.
And of course, you can’t go wrong with the Mozzarella Cheese Naan (RM9). Soft, pillowy, and oozing with gooey, savoury cheese, it’s best enjoyed with a mix of mint chutney and yogurt.
After such a feast, I was thankful for the refreshing drinks on offer. The Mango Lassi (RM14.20) was light, refreshing, and leaning more on fresh mango than heavy milk for a healthier twist.
The Signature Sirap Bandung (RM5.50) — made with homemade rose syrup — offered a sweet, nostalgic sip, while the hot Hazelnut Latte (RM13.50) was unexpectedly excellent. Honestly, where else can you get top-tier nasi kandar and a seriously good latte?
Final thoughts
My visit to Hameediyah Masjid India (Semua House Mall) left me completely satisfied, and, truth be told, a little guilty for feasting like royalty. While the prices may lean slightly higher than your average nasi kandar joint, the generous portions and top-tier quality more than justify the cost.
Hameediyah offers more than just a meal. With soul-satisfying food, a cosy yet contemporary ambience, and a legacy rich in history, every visit feels just as precious as the first.
Expected damage: RM9 – RM45 per pax
