Popular satay bee hoon stall, Shi Wei Da Satay Bee Hoon, is slated to pull down its shutters come 30 Apr 2024. This comes after 30 long years of operations within Bedok 85 Fengshan Food Centre and a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2018.

Shi Wei Da is singlehandedly helmed by Mr Ng Kim Siong. Like his stall, he has become a well-loved icon within the food centre. The news of his stall’s closure was first publicised by his daughter, Ms Adeline Ng, who took to their Facebook page to make the announcement.

Ms Ng wrote that the stall had been sold and that their sudden decision to close was a difficult one.

For context, Shi Wei Da is a joint operation between 2 different vendors — one sells Teochew porridge in the morning, while Mr Ng takes over with his satay bee hoon from 4pm onwards. Ms Ng confirmed in the comments that the stall had been sold by the porridge vendor.

On her father’s behalf, she also expressed much gratitude for patrons’ trust and support over the years.

The post was met with several disheartened and bittersweet reactions. Numerous commenters wrote about how they’d been enjoying Mr Ng’s satay bee hoon for decades, while some expressed that they’d miss it sorely.

Nonetheless, Ms Ng beckoned followers to stay tuned to their page as “good news” might be in store. Perhaps they’ve already found a new stall? We’ll find out in due time so don’t lose hope just yet!

For now, however, you can hurry on down to the stall for a last plate of their Michelin-approved Satay Bee Hoon (S$4/S$5). Each heaped plate offers great value for money, with a generous serving of bee hoon and plentiful ingredients blanketed by thick satay sauce.

The satay sauce is an attraction in and of itself. It is 100% made from scratch by Mr Ng, who painstakingly de-shells, roasts and grinds the peanuts before cooking them over the stove with other ingredients.

The result is a luscious sauce that’s a perfect balance of sweet and savoury, with nutty notes and a touch of spice that makes each mouthful all the better. It’s no wonder how the stall earned itself its acclaim.
