Need a cheap lunch in the CBD area? Shukuu Izakaya has just what you’re looking for. For a limited time only, you can head down to the restaurant to have a Japanese meal that’s easy on the wallet, with decor that feels like an izakaya plucked off the streets of Japan, away from the hustle and bustle.
They’re a short walk from both Telok Ayer MRT station and Tanjong Pagar MRT Station; simply turn into Stanley Street and you’ll find them along the same stretch.
For about a full month, you can enjoy their donburi selection at S$5++, which rotates between different rice bowls through the week. Friday’s Buta Katsu Kuro Curry (U.P. S$16) is served with pickles and a large pork cutlet. It wasn’t too juicy but not tough, either. The curry that holds everything together is thick, roasty and luscious, light on the spice with pronounced savoury notes.

If you’d like to have the Unagi Tama (U.P. S$16) donburi, it features 3 pieces of homemade dashi egg and thin slices of delectable kobayashi eel slicked with sweet unagi sauce.
The rest of their donburi menu includes Tori Soboro Don (Tuesday and Thursday) that comes with marinated minced chicken, edamame, onsen egg and Salmon Don (Thursday) topped with spicy salmon cubes on sushi rice.
As for the ever-popular Gyudon, it had sold out by the time I arrived on Wednesday, along with Negitoro Don that contains minced tuna belly on sushi rice with raw quail egg and tobiko.
With such big savings on lunch, perhaps some add-ons (S$2.50 each) of Miso Soup w/Asari (clams), Ramen egg, Potato Salad or Nasu Goma (eggplant with sesame sauce) might interest you.
Do note that this lunch promo is only on Tuesdays to Fridays, from 11.30am to 2pm. Orders are limited to one per person and the $5 charge is before GST and service charge. You’ll have approximately one month to savour the donburi as it seems Shukuu Izakaya is facing overwhelming demand. Let’s hope they see fit to extend the promotion regardless.
