New in town: Smile Martabak, City Hall — Popular online business with Muslim chef opens store in Funan Mall with giant martabak in flavours like Red Velvet and Pandan Cheese

If you’re in a hangry mood, here’s a reason to smile: the popular online business, Smile Martabak, just opened its flagship store in Funan Mall on 20 May 2022.

For the uninitiated, a martabak is an Indonesian street food made of a thick, fluffy pancake filled with ingredients. Martabak has a similar appearance to min jiang kueh, but is described to have a fluffier texture.

Smile Martabak offers a range of different fillings sandwiched within two gigantic, thick pancakes, before being cut into bite-sized pieces. Each sweet martabak is priced at S$19.30 for 10 pieces or S$5.95 for three pieces.

Indulge in Smile Martabak’s Red Velvet Oreo (Cream Cheese) Martabak, which comes with cream cheese and Oreo pieces encased within a vibrant red velvet pancake.

The Ondeh-Ondeh Special Martabak, on the other hand, has coconut and gula melaka within a moist pandan pancake, creating flavours that are reminiscent of the iconic Indonesian street food.

The flavour that stands out the most to me is the Original Choco-Cheese Martabak, as it combines sweet melted chocolate and savoury premium cheddar cheese. The fluffy pancake is slathered with Wijsman butter and condensed indomilk for added flavour.

Smile Martabak also offers Martabak Telur (S$16.95 for 12 pieces, S$8.65 for 6 pieces), a savoury alternative, in either Chicken or Beef. Unlike the sweet martabaks, these savoury pancakes are crispy and thin, and are fried with meat, eggs, green onions and shallots. Add S$0.30 for sambal chilli.

Smile Martabak’s flagship store also has exclusive dishes like Bakso Meatball Soup (S$7.90) and the Biscoff Cookie Latte (S$5.90).

I’ll admit that I’ve never tried martabak before, but Smile Martabak certainly piques my interest. With their new flagship store being conveniently located in Funan Mall, perhaps it’s a sign that I should give this popular Indonesian dish a try soon.
