Tucked in the neighbourhood of SS14, Subang Jaya is a cute little bakery called Sugar and I that sells the softest, fluffiest bombolonis… made with love. Started by brother and sister, former engineer Syed Mohd Ilyas and Sharifah Nur Ilisa (and their love for baking), the inventive duo tackle everything from cinnamon rolls, brownies, Japanese cream puffs and indulgent bombolonis.

Sugar and I - bomboloni

At Sugar and I, the standard bomboloni roster consists of 10 flavours including Nutella, Belgian Chocolate, Raspberry Cheese, Lotus Biscoff, Vanilla Custard, Niko Neko Matcha, Maple Walnut, Homemade Mixed Berry Jam and Monster Oreo. Don’t miss out on their flavour of the month, which for November is the nostalgic Homemade Kaya Butter bomboloni

What I tried at Sugar and I

Sugar and I - bomboloni

Blinded by the endless attractive choices, Ilyas and Sharifah very kindly suggested that my ravenous colleague and I try the Nutella, Raspberry Cheese, Lotus Biscoff and the Niko Neko Matcha. Time to start feasting!

Bakery - Nutella Bomboloni

We began with their best-seller, the Nutella Bomboloni (RM7.80). Visually, the Nutella Bomboloni was indeed a sinful dessert, filled to the brim with the hazelnut spread and dusted with granulated sugar. I gave the bomboloni a gentle squeeze and watched in fascination as the sweet creamy spread hypnotically oozed out onto the plate. I took a bite and my mouth was coated in Nutella— they definitely do not stinge on the fillings here.

Dessert - Lotus Biscoff bomboloni

Next was the flavour which took the world by storm during the pandemic: Lotus Biscoff Bomboloni (RM7.80). The freshly-made bomboloni was oozing with Lotus Biscoff filling and was topped with crushed Biscoff biscuits. Pillowy soft, I would have to award it the 2nd place. The filling was Sugar and I’s special blend of the caramelised biscuit spread with cream cheese. It reminded me of a Lotus Biscoff cheesecake— so decadent.

Dessert - Raspberry Cheese bomboloni

My personal favourite was the Raspberry Cheese Bomboloni (RM7.80). The soft, fluffy doughnut was filled with a sweet, tangy raspberry cheese filling and topped with a fresh raspberry.

The luscious filling was not overly sweet and I really enjoyed the sourish tang from the raspberries. I did not have a problem finishing this bomboloni, it was so good! This is perfect if you don’t have a sweet tooth but are still looking for something decadent to nibble on.

As a person who devours and drinks matcha on a weekly basis (sometimes even daily), I couldn’t hide my excitement when I discovered that one of Sugar and I’s bomboloni flavours was the Niko Neko Matcha. I was over the moon as Niko Neko is one of my favourite matcha powders.

Bomboloni - Niko Neko Matcha

Texture wise, Sugar and I does not disappoint. The doughnut was light and fluffy and inside, a silky smooth matcha cream. The only qualm I had about the filling was that the matcha taste could have been more pronounced. The cream was on the sweeter side and did not have the bitter balance that I fancy.

But bombolonis aren’t the only sweet treats that Sugar and I excel in. Ilyas was proud to tell me that as he brought out their signature Japanese cream puffs (otherwise known as Choux au Craquelin in French). I remember my first time having this— I was 18, and just a bite of these sweet balls of dough filled to the brim with silky smooth custard took me to cloud nine.

Sugar and I - Japanese cream puff

The first to hit my eager taste buds was the Japanese Cream Puff (RM6.80). The choux pastry puffs with their crisp craquelin exterior and creamy vanilla bean custard was indeed a beauty. I especially loved that the vanilla profile stood out— it felt like the cream puff came straight down from French pastry heaven.

But once I tasted the Chocolate Custard Cream Puff (RM6.80), I couldn’t even look at its compatriot. The luscious chocolate ganache wasn’t too sweet and had a deep chocolate flavour— I can practically taste it as I’m writing this. Paired with the light and airy choux pastry, this flavour is a must-try.

Final thoughts

Sugar and I - bomboloni

Quick tip: If you can’t decide on which desserts to choose, you can opt for their Box of Happiness 1 (RM42) which contains 4 bombolonis and 2 cream puffs with flavours of your choice. If you’re a tiny eater, you can consider Box of Happiness 2 (RM27) which contains 2 bombolonis and 2 cream puffs

Ilyas and Sharifah are always concocting new sweet ideas and a little birdy told me they have an especially exciting flavour releasing in December. But for now, the secretive duo are keeping the flavour under wraps. Looks like I’ll be swinging by Sugar and I for another delicious experience, and I suggest you do the same!
