I know everyone loves JB, and what’s not to love? The proximity and the food is reason alone to cross the border at least once in two weeks. Well, another place I love has to be Penang. A little further than JB, but I would argue has better food options. Teahouse 1973 is where you’ll all those familiar and comforting Penang flavours but without having to take a plane (not that we can now anyway).

At Teahouse 1973 you can find the motley crew of cafe food such as Beef Battered Fish Steak (S$13.80) and the ever-trendy (though questionable) Salted Egg Chicken Chop (S$13.80). Well, if we must revisit the whole salted egg trend, we’ll do it with a showdown which you can have a read right here.

However, if you want a go at their more Penang-esque flavours, why not try your hand at the Sambal Prawn + Nasi Lemak (S$13.80) with generous heaps of butterfly pea coconut rice and crispy sambal prawns—it’s a feast for the eyes. It might be a plate of rather fancy Nasi Lemak but with tried and true flavours like these, you’ll be licking the plate clean.

For something a little richer and more indulgent, the Curry Chicken Roti Prata (S$8.80) is right up my alley. Think fragrant, smooth curry with generous blocks of potato and fork-tender chicken. Ah, even thinking about it is making me salivate

Of course, my money is on the gorgeous High Tea Set (S$35 for two pax). It’s a pinky up affair that comes with a batch of freshly made cakes and a fresh pot of tea. To keep us truly on pointe, Teahouse 1973 changes ups the bakes every day so it’s a different experience every time.

If not, the Waffle Original Crispy+ Ice Cream (S$12.80) should satisfy every time. It’s a little bit of a mixed bag at Teahouse 1973 and sometimes that might be a good thing for our very picky tastebuds.
