Is this Laksa truly the “cheapest in town“? The folks behind The Asian Makanstall in Chinatown will answer that. Now selling bowls of Laksa at an affordable price of S$2 (U.P. S$4), this hawker stall has been operating for nearly a decade.
If you are wondering how the stall manages to sustain that crazy price tag, here’s why. According to Mr Lee, the co-founder of The Asian Makanstall, who is a Dignity Kitchen graduate, an anonymous customer donated a sum of money “to sell at this price.” Therefore, the stall’s Laksa is rooted in the heartfelt concept of Paying-It-Forward.
Apparently, this unknown saint has been frequently donating for quite a while already! Mad respect to whoever you are.
Worth it or not? Perfumed with coconut milk and a blend of other “secret ingredients” that Mr Lee did not want to divulge, this Laksa is the prime example of lemak. You cannot miss the homemade Yong Tau Foo pieces that are comfortably nestled at the top of white vermicelli noodles too.
This includes soft fishcake and crispy stuffed beancurd skin. The star of the YTF show is definitely the sponge-like tau pok (or tofu puffs) with porous layers within. SLURPPP, I particularly enjoy dunking that staple ingredient into my Laksa to soak up the rich broth that packs a punch. Nothing is more enjoyable than experiencing the robust medley of sweet, smooth and spicy flavours exploding in your mouth.
Did you know that The Asian Makanstall has an ever-changing menu on rotation? You can expect something new every time you visit.
Back in 2022, the stall featured the likes of Lor Mee, Thai Meat Omelette and Chicken Cutlet. On the other hand (or different menu), 2023 saw culturally diverse dishes such as Rojak, Chicken Briyani and Chicken Curry.
Moving straight back to 2024, aside from the piping hot S$2 Laksa, you can enjoy Char Kuey Teow and Mee Hoon Goreng, all yours at S$4 each. While the stir-fried kuey teow has a subtle smokiness, the mee hoon (aka bee hoon) has a variety of ingredients for contrasting textures (think succulent prawns against crunchy tau geh).
As seen in the sizeable portions for a solid price, this is pure “value for money“.
