Yu sheng is an essential dish to have during Chinese New Year celebrations— there’s nothing better than gathering around the table with your loved ones to lo hei and usher in good luck for the coming year. This year, The Soup Spoon is offering an unparalleled yu sheng experience complete with wholesome ingredients and convenient packaging.
The Soup Spoon’s Auspicious Lo Hei Set comes within an elegant cardboard packaging with a handle, making it easy and convenient to transport around. Its pretty and presentable packaging makes it suitable for gifting.
Priced at S$48.80, the Soup Spoon Lo Hei Set is relatively affordable in comparison to other yu shengs. This set is also suitable for 8 pax, and is halal-certified, ensuring that Muslim friends will be able to enjoy it, too.
Many of us know the struggle of not being able to memorise the auspicious phrases to say out loud during lo hei, so I love how the packaging includes the specific steps in which to add each ingredient, as well as the accompanying phrase to chant. No more having to pull out your phones to search for phrases on Google, The Soup Spoon has got you covered.
What I tried at The Soup Spoon
What makes this yu sheng stand out is the fact that its ingredients are much healthier and fresher than traditional yu sheng— unorthodox ingredients include arugula, quinoa, toasted almond slices and pumpkin seeds!
All 20 ingredients are individually packaged, making them super convenient and neat to pour out into the tray.
Step 1: Add the arugula, carrot, white radish, green radish and quinoa to the tray. These wholesome ingredients are a healthy and delicious base for your yu sheng, and are of the utmost freshness. The accompanying phrases to chant are 鸿运当头 (“hong yun dang tou”), 青春常驻 (“qing chun chang zhu”) and 步步高升 (“bu bu gao sheng”).
Step 2: Add the smoked salmon on top of the veggies and quinoa. To make your yu sheng a little fancier, you can consider rolling up the pieces of smoked salmon to create little roses, or you could leave them unrolled as is. As you add the salmon, chant the accompanying phrase, 年年有余 (“nian nian you yu”).
Step 3: Adorn your yu sheng with a pop of colour and sweetness! Add the red sweetened ginger strips, green peach strips, white sour ginger strips and brown cucumber strips to the yu sheng. You’ll easily find these 4 ingredients in the pockets of each corner of the packaging. Usher in great luck with the phrase 大吉大利 (“da ji da li”).
Step 4: Sprinkle five spice powder, cinnamon powder and pepper powder on top of the yu sheng while saying 招财进宝 (“zhao cai jin bao”).
Step 5: Make the yu sheng extra crunchy with sliced almonds, pumpkin seeds and toasted white sesame. Wish for a prosperous business with 生意兴隆 (“sheng yi xing long”).
Step 6: It’s time for some nutty goodness! Sprinkle in a generous amount of chopped peanuts, meant to symbolise a household filled with gold and silver— 金银满屋 (“jin yin man wu”).
Step 7: Pour in the pok chui crackers to further add some crunch to the yu sheng. 遍地黄金 (“bian di huang jin”) is the accompanying phrase, meaning a floor full of gold.
Step 8: Finally, pour in the ume wafu vinaigrette and squeeze in the calamansi to add an extra pop of flavour to the yu sheng. The accompanying phrase, 甜甜蜜蜜 (“tian tian mi mi”), wishes for a sweet and blissful life.
It’s now time to lo hei! Watch as all the ingredients come together harmoniously while you toss it.
The resulting yu sheng is incredibly fresh and crunchy with just enough sweetness and a nice umami flavour shining through. The wholesome The Soup Spoon Auspicious Lo Hei Set is light on the palate and delightfully flavourful. It is sure to be a hit during Chinese New Year gatherings!
