It’s not every day that you hear nasi lemak and pork berampah go hand-in-hand, but Together Nasi Lemak pairs these 2 mismatched ingredients up on a single plate. Their website proudly proclaims they’re voted as the best pork berampah nasi lemak in Malaysia! Since I was in Kuala Lumpur for work, I wasn’t about to miss out the opportunity to test that claim.

Together Nasi Lemak has 6 outlets around Malaysia centered around KL, Selangor and Seramban. Since the evening peak hour traffic was quite bad, I decided to swing by Four Season Food Avenue in Cheras that stays open till 1am daily. Imagine the tragedy if I had visited another branch and they were sold out — I would be hangry!

The whole place was huge, spanning an indoor food court and an outdoor hawker centre-ish section. It instantly reminded me of Chomp Chomp Food Centre back in Singapore. There was a Hong Kong movie playing on a projector, but the crowd was far too busy eating and chit-chatting to care.

I spotted the stall decked out in a bright green and yellow colour palette, complete with a bamboo pole decor that gave it a rustic look.

What I tried at Together Nasi Lemak

I’d be dumb to take a 40-minute car ride to this place and not order the Pork Berempah Set (RM16.90). We wanted to make our plates more luxurious by adding Sambal Kerang (+RM2) and Sambal Sotong (+RM2). However, both were not available — talk about a mood killer! Instead of the usual omelette or boiled egg, the plate of coconut rice was crowned with a beautiful sunny side-up. Its companions lying around included a generous scoop of sambal, the quintessential ikan bilis-peanut duo, some crackers, and sliced Japanese cucumber.

I made a beeline for the rice without adding any sambal. It wasn’t the basmati grain variety but the good ol’ classic jasmine rice. From the first spoonful, I was sold. Fragrant with a full-on coconutty punch,  it somehow managed to be rich without tipping into jelak territory.

The sambal was full of umami with dominant notes of dried shrimp. Thankfully, it wasn’t as saccharine as other nasi lemak places that probably add a truckload of sugar into the chilli. With that combo, I was instantly rocketed to flavour haven — passport not required.

Now, for the main star of the show, the fried pork. Each piece was tender and impeccably seasoned. The fat portion wasn’t chewy and simply disintegrated like melted butter with every bite. When eaten with the crumbs, the overall experience was taken up several notches, kissed with just the right hint of herbs and fried curry leaves.

We also gave the Paha Ayam Goreng XL Set (RM14.90) a try, which was also served with nasi lemak. Though each piece of chicken was well-battered and crispy, it felt like any other run-of-the-mill chicken cutlet that was enhanced with spices. It paled in comparison with the pork berampah.

Final thoughts
