Two Blur Guys started out in 2012 and they offer gourmet American-style burgers. Previously located at Tanjong Pagar, they moved into their new home located at Jalan Besar in June 2020. Social media coverage on them over the years hasn’t been as strong as that of other popular mainstream burger joints— I had never heard of them.
To be honest, I occasionally eat burgers from fast food joints whenever I’m having a bad day. I can count the number of gourmet burger joints I’ve visited in my life with two hands— that’s how cheap I am! I chanced upon Two Blur Guys one day while walking in the vicinity, and the pale green shopfront facade caught my eye. I am no burger connoisseur but I am a sucker for good food!
Upon entering, I was invited to a snuggly-looking eatery that had only a few tables with a bar counter, which offered bottled beers and wine. There were a few board games like Jenga on the front shelves, making this place seem like a nice hangout spot to chill with your friends. The menus were found via QR code on the table and payment had to be made before the food arrived.
What I tried at Two Blur Guys
Two Blur Guys has a variety of sides on their menu which includes Cheese Fries (S$7.90), Spam Fries (S$12.90) and Buffalo Wings (S$14.90 for 8). A small Japanese selection is also available, serving items like Yakitori (S$14.90 for 10) and Premium Edamame (S$8.90). Having Japanese fare wasn’t on the agenda today, so I didn’t order these.
I was feeling a little atas (happens not very often) and ordered their Grilled Foie Gras (S$21.90) which at that point seemed to be something that stood out from the rest. It came in four lovely pieces that were drenched in oil. According to the server, the oil came from the liver naturally, and wasn’t added on purpose.
My knife cut through the foie gras smoothly like melted butter. There was a light sprinkling of crushed black pepper on top that added a subtle spice, which was satisfying. The liver was fragrant and did not possess a strong gamey taste unlike those I’ve tried at other places.
Having two pieces was just right for me and I was glad my two dining partners helped me with the rest. My only gripe about the Grilled Foie Gras would probably be the amount of oil— I wished they’d remove some of it!
As a lover of bacon, I ordered their Streaky Bacon Burger (S$17.90) without batting an eyelid. I opted for a burger set (+ S$3.60), which includes fries, salad and ice cream. Whole wheat buns were used and the insides were stuffed with fresh tomatoes, a beef patty, two slices of bacon, truffle mayonnaise and a melted piece of gruyere cheese.
Soggy buns for a burger puts me off, and I’m glad Two Blur Guys‘s whole wheat buns managed to remain dry for the most part. The beef patty was moist and the rich gruyere complemented it so well. I was pleased that the truffle mayonnaise was flavourful, and yet did not overpower the taste of the meat. The juicy tomato helped cut the richness of the patty and the bacon.
I was slightly disappointed by the fact that the bacon was not really crispy although the taste was on point— they would be perfect if they were grilled a little longer! I had no complaints about the fries that came with it, which were crispy and perfectly seasoned. The salad had a drizzle of balsamic vinegar over it, nothing too fancy.
Two Blur Guy’s Grilled Chicken Masala Burger (S$14.90) which I also opted for a burger set (S$+3.60) looked like a fusion of Indian and American influences. It consisted of a piece of tender chicken thigh that was marinated in masala spices and slathered with a generous amount of curry mayonnaise on top, served with fresh tomato, and crunchy red onion slices.
It was a burst of flavours upon taking the first bite of the Grilled Chicken Masala Burger. The aromatic masala spices and curry mayonnaise added an interesting touch to the burger which was further enhanced by the juicy raw onions at the bottom. I would have preferred the masala flavours to penetrate the chicken thigh more as the insides were a little lacklustre for me.
Final thoughts
The burgers offered at Two Blur Guys are pretty diverse. Instead of the usual beef and chicken options like other burger joints offer, they have other options like Pulled Pork Burger (S$14.90) and TBG Fish Burger (S$15.90) which I’ll be interested to try on my next visit here.
Though Two Blur Guys needs slight improvement on their burgers, they were delicious enough to make me want to return for their other offerings. I’d just come here with a few friends and indulge in board games over some burgers and a few drinks.
