It’s a sad day for Berseh Food Centre goers and turtle soup lovers alike. Bobby Chu, the owner of Very Lucky Turtle Soup, has decided to close the stall at the end of Aug. The closure of Very Lucky Turtle Soup marks the end of a 60-year legacy for the 2nd generation hawker.

Founded in the 1960s, Mr Chu succeeded the store from his parents during the early 1980s and has been manning it since.

Unfortunately, due to standing nearly every day for 14-hour shifts, Mr Chu’s health has taken a hit. Even with an assistant who helps with waiting tables, issues stemming from poor blood circulation in his legs have caused him to rethink his career.

Mr Chu’s stall serves over 20 different dishes featuring variations of pork, chicken, duck, turtle and crocodile. His famed dishes include Herbal Turtle Soup (S$12 to S$50), Red Wine Chicken (S$6.50) and Crocodile Soup (S$25 to S$40). Of course, only legally farmed turtles and crocodiles are used here.
Though Mr Chu has declined his two sons’ offers to take over the family business, he has stated that his secret recipes will be up for sale for S$40k. Mr Chu believes that effort and dedication are most important in running a stall this popular, explaining his choice for closure rather than passing the baton.
While there is some hope of someone else taking over the store, the future remains bleak for regulars. So if you’re a fan of the myriad of offerings at Very Lucky Turtle Soup or if you want to try Mr Chu’s secret recipe, drop by Berseh Market before its Aug closure!
