Wei Nan Wang Hock Kian Lor Mee started all the way back in 1975 by Mr and Mrs Lee. Mr Lee started out as an apprentice back in the 60s in Chinatown. They had their first stall by the Singapore River but had to move to Golden Shoe Hawker Centre when an MRT line was built over it in 1980s.

Their lor mee differed greatly from most lor mee stalls. For starters, their gravy was much more watery as compared to traditional lor mee which is characterised by its viscosity and use of eggs.

They used steamed fish instead of the usual fried ones and also included lean pork meat as well as pork skin. Their lor mee is topped off with homemade fried fritters.

Apart from its distinctive lor mee, Wei Nan Wang Hock Kian Lor Mee was also known for its affordability. A bowl of lor mee that’s packed with toppings only costs S$3.50/S$4.50, prices of which which were unheard of especially in the CBD area.

Despite it being sombre news, we can at least know that Mr and Mrs Lee will finally be able to enjoy their well-deserved retirement knowing that they have filled thousands of tummies, and more importantly, the precious memories created with every bowl.
