It’s the stuff of legends when an old age star goes underground and emerges years later due to some unexpected publicity. That’s exactly what’s happening to ex-Mediacorp actor Lin Yisheng, 57, known for his roles in movies and series like Bulletproof Monk, Immortal Love and Unbeatables. He has recently come to light after having been part of The Wonder Shop, a live streaming shopping experience where you can spot him advertising skin products. Now, Yummiz has been brought to our attention.
In this process of being rediscovered, his eatery Yummiz is now in the spotlight after being featured in the Instagram stories of Chen Xiuhuan and Zoe Tay when they had gone to try out the food at Novena. He began the standalone eatery with his wife, Wendy Sio, and it offers homemade and local favourites, catering to the simple-food eating crowd.
The food is a product of personalised cooking style from “aunties” who have been running hawker stalls and industrial canteens. So you can definitely expect a touch of home and comfort if you choose to dig into these items. Their bestsellers include the Yummiz Curry Chicken (S$6.30) which comes with the options of rice, bread or prata and the Mee Hoon Kueh (S$5.80) which pops out for sure. The latter is the most popular as they tear it by hand and it gets sold out quickly. They switch the conventional pork broth with ikan bilis soup, which is sure to pack a good punch.
They serve only set meals which come with a drink of your choice. Their motive is to stick to affordable pricing within the S$7-S$8 range as their main clientele includes office workers looking for cheap, homely options. Other tasty items on the menu which stand out include both soup and dry versions of the Bak Chor Mee (S$5.30) and Sesame Oil Chicken (S$6.30). For something in the morning, check out the Yummiz Toast Sandwich Set (S$3.50).
After being cleared of the cheating charges against him by two men who alleged that he extorted S$195,000 from them in the name of donations, Lin Yisheng went on the down low. He prefers to be behind the scenes now and is focusing on his close-to-heart business venture. Don’t forget to check out this spot for some hearty, cheap food options in the Novena area.
