Omu Exterior

First established in Thailand in 2010, the Japanese franchise has now arrived in Singapore! OMU is located at Suntec City Mall, just a stone’s throw from the entrance of Esplanade MRT.

At OMU, you can choose from various sauces and toppings to go with their signature tomato fried rice, such as Japanese curry, to demi-glace sauce and pink mentaiko cream sauce.

Omu Interior

The restaurant is decked out in simple wood, grey and green furnishing, and boasts two separate dining areas, catering to OMU’s unique “L”-shaped shop space. What caught me about its interior was the special ceiling designed to look like a nest made of twigs.

An egg-cellent touch, I must say.

Omu Mentaikopinksauce

First up was the Mentaiko Cream Sauce Omurice with Lava Egg ($13.80, +$2 for lava egg), which was our favourite. The delightful pink cream sauce was flecked with mentaiko bits and had an authentic cod roe flavour.

We were given a special knife to cut through the lava egg, and the yummy, runny insides went really well with the tomato fried rice. The only regret we had was not ordering this dish with a side of meat or sausages to make it a full, hearty meal.

Omu Ebicurry

The Demi-glace Sauce Omurice with Deep Fried Shrimp ($14.80, +$2 for lava egg) did not disappoint as well. This came together with the fried tomato rice and four fried prawns.

The lava egg gave a creamy touch to the slightly tart demi-glace sauce, and cut through the oiliness of the prawns.

Omu Cheeseeggplant

The Curry Sauce Omurice with Cheese, Bacon, Eggplant & Mushrooms ($12.80, +$2 for lava egg) was my least favourite among the three dishes that we had. I felt that it was slightly acrid compared to the other kinds of Japanese curries that I’ve tried in Singapore.

The lava egg mellowed it out, however, this dish still didn’t quite cut it for us. The topping were delicious, but I feel that it may have worked better with a demi-glace sauce instead.

Omu Lavaegggroup

And this is the aftermath after the lava egg has been sliced onto the rice. The result is a ooey-gooey, creamy mess of soft omelette. Mix that up with your rice and you have a match made in heaven, guaranteeing you an intense post-meal food coma.

Those who love to interact with their food will find the lava egg adding an element of fun into their meal.

OMU is a great place to dine at especially if you are looking for something new to try for lunch, and getting to slice open your own lava omelette really sold it for me.

The catch is that you have to top up $2 for the lava egg, which brings the price of the dish up and isn’t worth the value for the gimmick. Taste-wise, the curry was pretty disappointing, but I would recommend the Mentaiko Cream Sauce Omurice with Lava Egg to those who are trying OMU for the first time.

Expected Damage: $16 – $18 per pax
