If health care workers are angels in white fighting COVID-19 at the frontline, food delivery riders have got to be the unsung warriors, ensuring that stay home Singaporeans get their bellies filled and cravings satisfied.
Although we are two weeks into the ‘Circuit Breaker’ period, the #SGUnited spirit in our community continues to grow as a hawker stall in Yishun—Soya Bean & Jelly Drink—is giving away free drinks to food delivery riders who are working tirelessly delivering food to our doorstep, rain or shine.
In appreciation of the hard work and efforts the riders are putting in during this period of uncertainty, the stall has prepared beverages for drivers from GrabFood, Food Panda and Deliveroo with no other purchases required.
As seen from their recent Facebook reply, Soya Bean & Jelly Drink has been in business at Chong Pang Hawker Centre since 1984. Currently run by the family’s second generation, they started this initiative as the owners understood that many delivery rider’s incomes have been badly affected. Thus, providing free drinks is a “little gesture to help encourage them”.
A little thought goes a long way and it seems like the owners of Soya Bean & Jelly Drink have been doing things right with the vast number of regulars they have garnered throughout the years. Even I was touched by their gesture and the love notes posted for the owners by their supporters online.
If you are a rider or know of someone who is working as one, do note that this initiative will go on from 14 April to 4 May 2020 from Monday to Friday till 3pm. Don’t forget to drop by Chong Pang Hawker Centre if you are around the area and grab a drink, cause you deserve it.
