First, you have to make sure that you stock your pantry full of brain foods. You want to have as many antioxidants, healthy fats, good sugars, and protein in there as possible. Protein plays an essential role in concentration, so if you find yourself constantly struggling with brain fog, this might be the issue. You want to vary your sources of protein. Go for a mix of nuts, lean meats, and fatty fish if you want to get a steady supply of protein.

You also need to learn how to snack smarter. High sugar or fatty snacks will only slow you down. There are tons of ways that you can snack and have the same satisfaction without having to go for unhealthy stuff. For example, instead of getting chips and soda, you could easily substitute this with some low sugar sparkling lemon water, hummus, and homemade oven-baked pita chips. You’ll get something much more satisfying and you won’t feel horrible after. You’ll also be much more focused during classes.

Sugars also play a very important role for you as a student. Sugar is the brain’s main source of fuel, and choosing your sugars wisely will provide you with a steady flow of energy to keep those neurons firing.

Here, the best choice is to go with complex sugars every time. This means switching any type of white refined grain or sugar with a darker alternative. Things like white rice and bread might give you a sudden bolt of energy, but the crash can be debilitating. With complex sugars, the body takes more time to break them down and digest, which drip feeds sugar into your system. This means that you will have energy for a longer period without any crashes.

Antioxidants prevent inflammation, and inflammation also affects mental function, especially the brain fog we mentioned earlier. Foods that are high in antioxidants like dark chocolate and berries have all been shown to improve cognitive performance. One study even found that cocoa could help improve blood flow to the brain.

So, make sure that you pack as many of these in your diet as you can and keep things balanced.

Try to Fit in Exercise

You also have to make sure that you get the amount of physical activity that you need. This is where you’ll need to make your breaks count. You have to find a way to get a little bit of exercise in between sessions, even if it’s for a few minutes.

We recommend you get yourself some sort of machine so that you can exercise at home. You also want to spend as much time outside as possible. You need to get out at least once per day or you run the risk of getting in a slump.

The more fresh air and exercise you get, the more oxygen you’ll get into your bloodstream, which ends up oxygenating the brain as well. You’ll have an elevated mood and will find mental work much easier. We also suggest you get out every morning before you do anything. It doesn’t have to be intense; just 15 minutes of brisk walking will be enough to get your blood pumping and prime yourself for the rest of the day.

Get the Right Setup

Some people will have difficulty staying in one place for hours. If it has been a while since you have been on a school bench, you will need to adapt to this. However, this can be facilitated if you have the right tools and setup.

One of the first things we would encourage you to do is to either get yourself a physical blue light filter for your computer or some anti blue light glasses. Blue light is a leading cause of eye strain, and reducing it will allow you to spend more time on lectures without experiencing fatigue. It will also allow you to retain more of the information and not have to constantly go back to see if you missed anything. There are also applications like F.lux that allow you to reduce the amount of blue light that is emitted from your device.

Besides that, you want to make sure that you have an ergonomic chair that facilitates blood circulation and an ergonomic desk. We also suggest that you pick a study area that is remote from all the action in the house, but with plenty of natural light to keep your moods up.

These are all essential tips that online nursing students should follow. You want to be able to perform to the best of your abilities, so keep these in mind and make sure that you always put your health first.
