Malaysia is experiencing one of the most challenging periods in its history due to higher inflation, which means increasing food prices and living costs. But one Malaysian seller is hoping to make a difference in the lives of her fellow Malaysians with her RM3.50 ‘budget rice’ and by giving away free food to the needy.

According to MalayMail, Nurul Hashima Abu Aris‘s decision to sell food at a cheaper price came from the fact that she paid RM7 for a half portion of rice with a spoonful of vegetables and a piece of salted fish during the Covid-19 movement control order period.

She considered RM7 overpriced and wondered how those affected by the quarantine through loss of income could afford to feed themselves.

So with the help of her son, Arfan, she set up her budget rice stall Nasi Bajet Shima in 2020, and charged only RM3.50 for a packet. Now, she sells 200 pre-packed parcels a day and they’re sold out an hour and a half after she opens for business. Ayam Masak Merah and Ayam Minyak Kicap are her bestsellers.

“I usually give away free rice packs and some money to those who really cannot afford them. I even invite them to visit my stall again in the future,” said Hashima. She even used the profit that she got from the sale to help at least 50 people by buying groceries or baby essentials.

For those who want to support her business, you can visit her stall which is located in front of the Al-Falah surau in Kota Damansara.
