As someone who studied near the area, Geylang Lor 29 Charcoal Fried Hokkien Mee has been my go-to hokkien mee joint for the past 9 years of my existence. Sad to say, they will be shifting to 936 East Coast Road after a long 2 decades.
Easties, not to worry! This famed place will still be in the east of Singapore, just a couple of streets away. Now, it will be at a newly renovated coffeeshop with a bigger dining area as well as an open-air car park. Isn’t that neat?
Sadly, this stall was also in the news recently because of the former boss Alex’s passing after a bout of poor health. His daughter, Penny has taken over the stall and carries on the hokkien mee legacy.

The reason behind the move is a rise in rental costs. In our previous interview with Geylang Lor 29 Charcoal Fried Hokkien Mee, Penny mentioned that the increase in operational costs was a major issue. Thus, the shift of location was inevitable.
They are scheduled to begin operations there on 21 Jun 2023.
Cooked over charcoal (hence, the name of the stall), their hokkien mee is said to be done the ‘traditional’ way. While other places have switched to using gas, Geylang Lor 29 Charcoal Fried Hokkien Mee believes that using charcoal truly makes the difference, taste-wise.
Personally, I would say that their hokkien mee really is something special. It has a homey taste that is just perfect for soothing the soul after a long day. I have always adored how much squid they add to each dish, which gives a fantastic bite to every last morsel.
As they continue their legacy just a short distance from the original location, I am certain that there will be many folks going there to support them. With a brand-spanking new place, there is much to look forward to!
