Judging by the reception of my last stall-closure article, it seems that news is easily misinterpreted, so I’ll take special care with this one. In a recent Facebook post, it was announced that Bukit Panjang Hawker Centre’s most popular fishball noodle stallYou Xiang Teochew Noodles officially closed its doors to the public on 23 Oct.

Serving up affordable, delectable bowls of bak chor mee and fishball noodles since 1985, You Xiang Teochew Noodles had been in business for 39 years. It’s no surprise that they have become Bukit Panjang Hawker Centre’s most popular stall, with some saying they generate the longest queues there!

With their super authentic and affordable bowl of Fishball Noodles priced at S$2.70 (Soup & Dry), I can see why this is the case. Add to that their other popular dish of Mushroom Minced Meat Noodles (S$3.50) or bak chor mee, you really couldn’t complain.

Whilst the farewell note did not state why the stall has closed, the rising overhead costs for hawker owners have made it challenging to sustain a hawker business. Add that to the extremely long working hours and competitiveness, it sure doesn’t get any easier.

Having grown up overseas, I have developed a lot of respect and admiration for all the hawker owners out there. As residents, we also need to do our part and continue to support local hawker businesses.
