If you haven’t heard of kare pan, or Japanese curry bread, allow me to catch you up on it real quick: Japanese-style curry is wrapped in dough, rolled in breadcrumbs and deep-fried till it’s crunchy and golden.

If that sounds like something you’d enjoy, I’ve got good news for you: Giraffa, one of Japan’s most popular kare pan vendors, is setting up shop in Singapore.

Located in Komachi Street in Kamakura (with a few other franchises across Japan), Giraffa (whose name means “giraffe” in Italian) is famous for their cheese-filled kare pan, and you’ll often see long snaking lines as people queue up for a taste of it.

Why the name, you might wonder – it’s because Giraffa hopes that their kare pan will make customers wait eagerly for it with their necks outstretched, just like giraffes.

Their curry recipe features beef and pork that’s been stewed carefully to extract maximum flavour, combined with honey and apple for sweetness. These flavours are then carefully balanced out with acidity from tomatoes and wine, and combined with over 30 different spices. It’s little wonder that it’s won the Curry Grand Prix for 3 consecutive years.

This delicious goodness is then wrapped in a slightly sweet, milk-flavoured bread dough and stuffed with a generous amount of cheese before being deep-fried. The end result is so addictive that they can sell up to 1,500 pieces of these kare pan in a single day.

The Singapore outlet is currently set to open in Westgate in Dec 2024, and we eagerly await more information for this deliciousness.
