Lee Mama Yam Cake, an old-school stall serving traditional Chinese snacks at Mei De 美德 Coffeeshop in Bukit Batok, is saying goodbye to customers at the end of this month.

A netizen on Facebook shared a photo of the sign announcing the news put up by the stall owners, 2 aunties who have been running it for 40 years.
Sadly, they are closing the stall due to their old age, poor business and rising costs. They graciously thanked patrons for supporting the stall over the years.

According to another netizen who has been patronising the stall for 20 years, Lee Mama Yam Cake doesn’t have extensive kitchen facilities as it is situated in the middle of the coffee shop. The lady boss has been making dishes like Chai Poh and Handmade Glutinous Rice (S$2.80) by herself in a separate kitchen.
For all her hard work, everything on their menu is below S$3–can you believe it? Their Chwee Kueh (S$2.20) and Wah Kueh (S$2.20) are quite popular with their customers, too.

This is one of the few places in Singapore still selling Wah Kueh, or ‘bowl cake’ in Hokkien. It is a steamed rice cake doused in a savoury brown sauce and topped off with garnishes like minced garlic or spring onions to cut through the heartiness.
Although it is similar to the more commonly seen Chwee Kueh, the latter is of Teochew heritage. Don’t mix the two up!
Netizens in the comments of these posts are lamenting the loss of such old heritage food stalls in Singapore, pointing out how more of such stalls have been closing down recently.
If you want a homely breakfast savouring nostalgic Chinese flavours, do head down to Lee Mama Yam Cake before they close on 30 Apr!
