Not long after opening on 11 Dec 2025 with a pet-friendly identity, Sunway Square Mall has introduced an immediate ban on pets in all enclosed indoor spaces.

In a social media announcement, Sunway Square Mall said the revised policy aligns with guidance reiterated by Selangor Local Government and Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Ng Suee Lim.
The decision represents a sharp shift from the mall’s initial positioning and follows a Selangor state directive that continues to prohibit pets in shopping malls throughout the state.

The mall explained that the change is intended to maintain safety, hygiene and overall comfort for visitors. Although pets are no longer allowed within indoor retail and dining areas, management noted that accommodations for pet owners remain in place.

Pets are still permitted at Squarrel’s Playground, the outdoor pet-friendly area located by Sunway South Quay Lake. In addition, pets may move between the B3 and B4 car parks and the outdoor zone, as long as the transit is carried out under the supervision of mall security.

Sunway Square Mall also thanked the public for their patience and understanding, while apologising for any inconvenience caused by the abrupt policy update. The statement acknowledged that the mall’s original pet-friendly approach had attracted significant attention from visitors.
The policy reversal comes after several days of public discussion following the mall’s launch, with online users questioning whether a pet-friendly shopping mall complied with Selangor regulations.
Uncertainty was compounded by observations that limited food and beverage outlets appeared to allow pets indoors, prompting concerns over uneven implementation.

Ng has since emphasised that while pet-inclusive retail concepts are common overseas, local laws and social considerations must take priority.
He added that Selangor needs to approach such trends cautiously, particularly within a multi-racial society where views on hygiene and shared spaces differ.
For the time being, Sunway Square Mall has drawn a clear line. Pets remain welcome outdoors, while indoor shopping spaces are reserved exclusively for people.
