I think we can all agree that no matter how good or bad a hawker’s food is, it’s always a shame if they close. That’s how I felt when I heard that the stall we had found to be Singapore’s worst-rated char kway teow (according to Google ratings), Feng Ji Char Kway Teow in Beauty World Food Centre has closed.

According to a Facebook post, the divisive char kway teow hawker stall in Beauty World Food Centre has been replaced by Basil King, a viral Thai food chain. Reactions were mixed, to say the least. Most commenters expressed the brand’s uncanny similarity to Phed Mark, a small restaurant in Thailand opened by food content creator Mark Wiens. In fact, Basil King’s and Phen Mark’s logos are uncannily similar.
When we tried the food at their Jurong West outlet, we were pleasantly surprised by the quality. However, it seems like most people disagree.

Feng Ji Char Kway Teow certainly had a reputation before it closed. They were infamous within the hawker centre for their small portions. Feng Ji Char Kway Teow had 2.5/5 stars out of 99 reviews at the time of their closure, which isn’t a good look for a hawker.
According to a commenter, their last day was 20 Dec 2025, and they heard from the stall owner that rising rent drove them out.

Their Singaporean-style Char Kway Teow came in S$5 and S$6 portions. We unfortunately found ourselves agreeing with others that the wok hei was noticeably absent, and the noodles lacked the richness and intensity expected. Their cockles were so briny that it felt like swallowing seawater, and the meagre amount of lup cheong really did not help the dish overall.
That being said, it wasn’t all doom and gloom. We did enjoy the bits and pieces of fried eggs that absorbed the dark soy sauce, and the portions weren’t as bad as they seemed.
Even though they are considered the worst-rated, I still mourn the closure of Feng Ji Char Kway Teow, and I hope you feel the same way. Let’s show some empathy!
