Yakumo Ramen, the Tokyo-based ramen shop recognised with a Michelin Bib Gourmand for 9 consecutive years since 2018, has opened its first outlet outside Japan — right here in Taman Sentosa, Johor Bahru.

Founded in 1999 in Meguro, Tokyo, Yakumo Ramen has built a steady following over the years for its clear, seafood-forward broths and meticulous preparation style. Rather than focusing on bold gimmicks or trendy twists, the brand leans into consistency and technique.

One of Yakumo’s defining features is its signature white soy sauce broth. Light in appearance but layered in flavour, it’s gently simmered with premium ingredients and infused with subtle seafood umami

The ramen is paired with smooth, straight noodles that carry a pleasant wheat aroma. Every bowl is assembled with careful attention to detail — from broth temperature to the placement of toppings — reflecting the Japanese philosophy of omotenashi, or thoughtful hospitality.

Unlike many ramen shops where only chashu takes centre stage, Yakumo incorporates delicate wontons into its bowls. The thin wrappers and savoury filling add another layer of texture and flavour, especially as they absorb the broth.

The Yakumo Dashi Special Wonton Ramen (RM26.90) is available in both white and dark broth, offering a good introduction to the brand’s signature style.

Other options include the creamy Tori Paitan Ramen (RM23.80) and the slightly spicy Tantan Tori Paitan Ramen (RM21.80). If you’re in the mood for something lighter, the Japanese Dashi Wonton Soup (RM18 for 6 pieces) keeps things simple.

There’s also an extensive selection of sides to complement the meal, including Potato Korokke (RM9.90), Yaki Gyoza (RM13.90), Deep-fried Tofu with Golden Century Egg (RM12.90), and Sake-infused Karaage Chicken (RM12.90).

With its opening in Johor Bahru, Yakumo Ramen adds another option for those seeking Japanese ramen in Taman Sentosa. For fans of clear broths and wonton-filled ramen, it’s a spot worth visiting!
