You can usually smell stinky tofu before you find it at a night market. That pungent fermented funk is hard to miss, but beneath the infamous aroma is tofu with a crisp exterior and savoury, fermented flavour. Ghost Stinky Tofu takes that classic street food and gives it a few Malaysian-inspired twists.

One of its more interesting creations is Gepuk Stinky Tofu (RM18), which pairs 9 pieces of tofu with a generous drizzle of spicy gepuk sambal, homemade cashew sauce, and sweet kicap manis.

For a more classic introduction, go for their Original Stinky Tofu (RM15). The crispy tofu comes with pickled lychee and tangerine peel (chen pi) on the side, along with Ghost Stinky Tofu’s house chilli sauce. The fruity, tangy accompaniment adds a refreshing contrast to the tofu’s stronger fermented flavour.

Not stopping at tofu cubes, the stall also turns the snack into Stinky Tofu Dumplings, wrapping the fermented tofu in dumpling skin before frying it. There are also Stinky Tofu Puffs (RM15), which might just be the first of its kind in Malaysia. If you’re already curious about stinky tofu, these make for a fun way to try it in a slightly different form.

What makes Ghost Stinky Tofu stand out is that its menu is vegan and Muslim-friendly, which isn’t always easy to find when it comes to stinky tofu. It’s also a fun option for first-timers who are curious about the infamous fermented snack but would rather ease into it with more familiar flavours.
You can find them at Public Bank Old Klang Road from Wednesday to Sunday (9pm – 3am), and Eco Sanctuary Mall Carpark every Tuesday (4pm – 10pm). Its products are also available online, so you don’t necessarily have to wait for your next night market visit to get your stinky tofu fix.
