If you’re a fan of insect titbits (I’m looking at you, mealworm snack), this is your next stop. Okay, jokes aside, I did not expect to see Ba Wang Claypot’s chicken soup on TikTok for all the wrong reasons — maggots.

Yep, you heard that right. The post hit TikTok on 31 Jul, with bold captions warning possible consumers. ‘Never coming here to eat again’ might sound drastic in any other situation, but if I found maggots in my soup, I’d give this place a wide berth too.
Located in Hougang Green Shopping Centre, Ba Wang Claypot first opened on 1 Sep 2024, having taken over the store from a vegetarian restaurant. This relatively new spot garnered positive reviews from a small number of guests on Google — until this incident, that is.

The netizen shared clips of the maggots fished out of the Ten Herbs Tonic Chicken Soup (S$7.90). Don’t worry, the netizen didn’t continue drinking the soup after the first few uninvited “guests” were found. They poured it into a separate bowl and took more pictures of the incriminating evidence.

The post has since garnered hundreds of comments. Some advised the poster to report the incident to NEA or SFA, to which the poster replied that they’d already done so. Many expressed concerns over hygiene standards and food safety as well, noting that several other establishments have had the same issues in recent times.
With the amount of attention on this TikTok video and the formal SFA complaint lodged, I’m sure action will be taken against the store owners soon. While food safety levels can be raised with the right training or mindset, knowing that people make such incidents public does give me peace of mind when eating out.
The next time you’re scooping through soup, remember to give your ingredients a closer glance, because it pays to be extra vigilant!
