If you’re a big lover of hotpot like my editor, Pavin, then this place is for you. Introducing Black Knight, a pioneer hotpot fan favourite which has been operating in Taipei for over 40 years. And now, they’ve just opened a brand new space located at our very own Millenia Walk.

Since opening for business in 1981, it has amassed a wide fanbase which includes celebrities like singer-songwriter Jay Chou, director Ang Lee, and more.

The Millenia Walk space has floor-to-ceiling windows which lets in plenty of natural light. It also boasts several VIP rooms for private cosy affairs.

In my opinion, the soup base for a hotpot establishment is very important— this is where Black Knight shines. Their 7 tantalising broths are slow-cooked for 16 hours to bring out all the natural flavours.

I was lost for words when the service staff carried the hotpot towards our table. It was a beautiful yellow ceramic pot adorned with floral motifs, bearing a striking resemblance to an emperor’s robe featured in period dramas.

We tried the Fish Maw Chicken Pot (S$48 for single pot) and the Spicy Pot (S$38 for Single Pot, S$58 for Double Pot).

The Fish Maw Chicken Pot is boiled with fish maw, kampong chicken, dry scallops and cordyceps. Its taste reminded me of a cross between a robust shark’s fin broth and a chicken collagen soup— really delicious!

The Spicy Pot is bound to be extremely popular with mala fans who enjoy “xiao la” (less spicy), and its simmered together with frozen bean curd, beef tendon and beef tripe. I was taken aback at the generous serving of ingredients in the broth which felt like I’d ordered a separate à la carte portion.

The meats served at Black Knight are of high quality. From Japanese A4 Wagyu (S$128) to Okinawa Black Pork Belly (S$26), this is the place to be if you want to impress your family or an important business client.

There are 18 kinds of condiments for you to choose from. Besides crowd-favourites like sesame sauce, I spotted a couple of unique offerings.

One of them was the black bean sauce. It had a delectable mix of umami XO sauce and salty black beans— perfect for dipping meats in!

I also spotted my all-time favourite ginger sauce, similar to the topping used for Soup Restaurant’s Samsui Ginger Chicken— this is one sauce that’s rarely seen served at other establishments.

Though dining at Black Knight won’t be the most affordable, the luxurious broths and premium ingredients are well worth the price point, in my opinion.

Pay this place a visit the next time you want to impress your relatives and guests. I know I will!
