When ordering meals from Food & Beverage establishments in Singapore, one of the worst things that we could experience is finding foreign objects inside our food. Unfortunately for the customer of a stall in Amoy Street Food Centre, her dining experience was ruined by the presence of a fishhook in her soup.
On 9 May 2023, a 36-year-old woman, Ms Zhang, ordered food from a fish soup stall in Amoy Street Food Centre at around 1pm, according to Shin Min Daily News. She had ordered fish soup for lunch, and had opted for takeaway to bring it back to her company to enjoy.
As she finishing the bowl of fish soup, Ms Zhang noticed a black object at the bottom of the plastic takeaway container. Initially, she brushed it off as just being a fried shallot, but upon closer inspection, she realised that the black object was actually a small, rusty fishhook.
Ms Zhang was naturally horrified at her discovery, and decided to report the incident to the authorities. However, she chose not to inform the stall owner about it.

Ms Zhang did not disclose the name of the fish soup stall to Shin Min Daily News, but revealed that it was a famous stall that garnered long queues on a daily basis. She expressed her concern about her discovery, stating that there would be disastrous consequences if someone were to swallow a fishhook on accident.
When Shin Min Daily News visited the fish soup stall, the stall owner expressed surprise at the incident and apologised profusely. According to him, fishhooks are occasionally found hidden within the gills of the fishes, so they are extra careful when cleaning out the fish heads.
The stall owner said that this was the first time such an incident had occurred in all 40 years of the stall’s operations, and claimed responsibility for the business’ negligence. He expressed that the stall would be willing to give Ms Zhang another bowl of fish soup for free or refund her, should she choose to return in the future.
While the odds of us finding foreign objects in our food is often slim, there is always a chance of it happening. Hence, it is important to always be careful while eating.
