Here’s a film festival in Singapore for you to visit over the weekend: the annual European Film Festival (EUFF) 2024, which showcases a selected curation of European films. The EUFF 2024 is one of the longest-running film festivals locally, having begun in 1991.
Through gripping storytelling, the festival encourages discourse and conversations while championing central European Union values of respect for human dignity and inclusivity.
The 33rd Edition of the European Film Festival will be held from 25 April to 25 May 2024 at The Projector (Cineleisure), with 24 films from 24 European countries. The films might come from one country, but they are symbolic of Europe’s common cultural heritage.
A standard ticket costs S$16. Students, seniors, domestic helpers, Singapore Film Society members, National Servicemen, and disabled persons get a discounted ticket price (S$14).
Here is my selection of the cream of the crop.
1. My Love Affair With Marriage (2022) (NC16, 23 May, 8 pm)
This animated musical comedy is a coming-of-age story of a young woman named Zelma as she embarks on a 23-year journey in search of a partner and a long-lasting marriage.
An international co-production of firms in Latvia, the United States and Luxembourg, filming took 7 years to complete. Signe Baumane animated, wrote and directed the film.
The film, which premiered at the Tribeca Festival in 2022, has won awards, such as the Jury Distinction for a Feature Film award at Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
As part of the European Film Festival 2024, the Embassy of Luxembourg presents the film.

2. Queen Marie of Romania (2019) (M18, 24 May, 8 pm)
Ravaged by the First World War and political turmoil, Romania has its last hope pinned on its Queen, who will be heading to Paris to lobby for recognition of its unification.
The historical drama, based on true events, stars actress Roxana Lapu as the Queen. Reviews praise Lapu’s “impeccable performance in her depiction of the regal character”.
While the film’s language is Romanian, it is subtitled in English.
As part of the European Film Festival 2024, the Embassy of Romania presents the film.
3. Larry (2022) (R21, 25 May, 8 pm)
Featuring up-and-coming actor Benett Vilmányi, the drama tells a distressing tale of the titular young rapper alienated from others because of his speech impediment.
He subsequently overcomes his fear of rapping in front of people and enters a rap contest.
While the film’s language is Hungarian, there are English subtitles.
As part of the European Film Festival 2024, the Embassy of Hungary presents this film.
