Heun Kee Claypot Chicken Rice, the Bib Gourmand-listed stalwart that helped define Pudu’s after-dark dining scene, has officially closed its doors for good.

The restaurant announced the permanent closure of its original outlet in a notice shared recently, bringing an end to a nearly 4-decade chapter in Kuala Lumpur’s food history.

In its farewell message, Heun Kee Claypot Chicken Rice’s team thanked patrons for their loyalty, memories, and years of support, calling it an honour to have served the Pudu community. With that, one of the city’s most recognisable claypot chicken rice addresses signed off.

Founded by Madam Heun May Lan in 1985, Heun Kee began as a modest stall in Pudu. The early days were far from glamorous. Business was slow, and Madam Heun herself admitted the flavours were not quite right at first.

She refined the recipe relentlessly, adjusting and reworking until it reached the version that regulars would later swear by.

Over the next 16 years, the stall relocated 6 times, often forced to move once growing popularity caught the attention of landlords. Stability finally arrived in 2001, when Heun Kee secured the shoplot that would become its long-term home and the site of its eventual cult following.

Central to that following was Madam Heun’s distinctive 2-heat charcoal cooking method. Claypots were cooked over charcoal from below, then finished with hot charcoal placed on the lid.

The process reduced cooking time while keeping the chicken tender and perfuming the rice with a deep smoky aroma; fragrant rice crowned with a golden crust, a texture and aroma regulars could recognise instantly.

Dinner queues spilling onto the pavement became routine, especially after the restaurant gained wider attention from television features such as Taste with Jason in 2013.

When the Michelin Guide Kuala Lumpur and Penang debuted in 2022, Heun Kee earned Bib Gourmand recognition and retained it consistently through subsequent editions.

Following news of the closure, diners were informed that a similarly named Heun Kee Claypot Chicken Rice outlet in Taman Connaught, Cheras, will continue operating

For many, Heun Kee was more than just a place to eat. It was a nightly ritual, a smoky-scented wait, and solid evidence that humble beginnings, perseverance, and a claypot over charcoal can still build legends in this city.
