Not in the mood for bak kut teh? Here are 10 Klang eateries with delicious alternatives

Say the word bak kut teh to any Malaysian and they’ll tell you ‘Klang’ in return. Just like how Ipoh is synonymous with chicken rice and Penang is with nasi kandar. But having explored the delicious ins and outs of the oldest town in Malaysia, I discovered there’s more to Klang than endless bak kut teh restaurants.

Did you know that one of the restaurants in Klang holds the elusive title ‘King of Spare Ribs’? From spare ribs to handmade pau, I scoured the area to find you the 10 best eateries in Klang that you have to try (that doesn’t revolve around bak kut teh, of course).

1. Klang Food Centre

Klang Food Centre - Restaurant

When you’re in Klang, you must stop by Klang Food Centre for their handmade pau. Thousands of pau are made here on a daily basis. There are 14 varieties: Otak-Otak Pau, Yam & Pork Pau, Custard Corn Pau, Peanut Pau, Lotus Seed Paste Pau, and Sang Yoke Pau.

The pau sold here are not your generic ones sold in shops with perfect looking skin. The skin here is much softer and it does not stick to your teeth. Instead it’s airy and light. I personally recommend the Sang Yoke Pau (RM2.80) which contains slices of tender pork and carrot marinated in a ginger sauce.

Peng Heong Hakka Paikut - restaurant

Located in Lorong Gudang Nanas, Peng Heong Hakka Paikut is practically an institution in Klang. Having operated for decades, it’s known for its authentic Hakka cuisine, affordable prices and spare ribs. The restaurant even holds the delicious coveted title of ‘King of Spare Ribs’.

Their Spare Ribs (RM24 for two pieces) are nothing like you’ve ever tasted. The tender meat is served with a rather sweet sauce, perfect to go on a bowl of steaming white rice. Another one of their specialties is the pork meatballs— crunchy and fried to crispy perfection.

What is it that makes this mee hoon kueh so loved? It’s the hand-torn noodles. It has a velvety smooth texture, and soaks up the broth beautifully. Paired with the freshly fried anchovies, it makes the perfect meal during a cold day.

4. Restaurant All Family

On a tight budget? At Restaurant All Family, you can have your pick of roast duck rice, roast chicken rice, salted chicken rice, barbecued pork rice, siew yoke rice, or wan tan noodles— each for the wallet-friendly price of RM4.50

The amount of rice the dishes come with is super generous and the roast duck is my personal favourite. On the fatty and juicy side, it complements the rice perfectly. And frankly, where would you get such huge portions at such affordable prices in Selangor these days? Tell me, and I’m there!

Having been around for 45 years, Hainan Curry Rice is the restaurant in Malaysia that sells this unique dish. Basically, you get a choice of braised ingredients: bean curd, pork slices, egg, intestine, tofu pok or pork offal soup to go with rice that’s covered by a layer of thick gooey curry. A meal here will cost you between RM6 to RM10

The consistency will take some getting used to for those who are not familiar with having curry cooked this way. However, food sells out pretty fast during lunch so you might want to go down early!

At Love Mom Restaurant, you’ll find a good assortment of Sri Lankan delights and Indian dishes here. Their crowd-puller however is their appam (RM2) which is known for being thin, crisp and crunchy on the outside and thick, warm and gooey on the inside.

There are several types of appam you can order, including a regular one with milk, one with brown sugar, and one with egg. The milk and brown sugar is slightly on the sweet side, while the egg version is good for anyone who prefers a savoury option.
