Everyone remembers their first time at KOMA; I know I certainly do. The breathtaking red-on-dark of the massive arched passageway, the giant golden bell dominating the cavernous dining area over the traditional Japanese footbridge and, of course, the enticingly elevated food.

It’s been 6 years since Singapore first experienced KOMA and the anniversary celebrations bring together the best of its unique dining experience for a limited time!

In the lead up to their 6th Anniversary (26 July), from 22 to 27 July, KOMA will regale new and returning diners with the uniquely elegant Anniversary Menu specials. These 6  à la carte dishes capture the essence of KOMA, embodying the premium Japanese restaurant’s ability to coax exquisite flavours from its culinary creations.

What I tried from KOMA’s 6th Anniversary menu

koma - table full of dishes

We very mathematically tried 6 Anniversary dishes from KOMA’s 6th Anniversary menu.

koma - tuna pizza

I am not surprised that my old favourite, the Tuna Pizza (S$27++), was the best of them. Regulars may recall that the Tuna Pizza used to come in square servings, but they have reverted to a more classic and fun circular mould now.

Geometry aside, the chemistry of flavours dancing on my tastebuds gave my brain a gastronomic high. The freshness of the tuna, the perfect balance of the condiments, and the beauty of the textures were captivating.

koma - Yellowtail Aji Amarillo

I was pleasantly surprised by the Yellowtail Aji Amarillo (S$27++), a dish that I had not tried at KOMA before (how very silly of me). It’s apparently one of their most popular items and I got to understand why.

Aji amarillo is the exotically wondrous Peruvian yellow chilli, which somehow expresses hints of mango and raisin alongside its moderate heat. This sweet-spicy acidity is the perfect complement to the umami-forward flavour of yellowtail.

koma - salmon pillow

We also tried 4 KOMA signatures, starting with the Salmon Pillow (S$18++). I would say it’s more of a sofa cushion shape but I can’t argue with its popularity. This is a wonderful appetiser that comes as a pastry shell filled with smoked avocado puree.

It performs its appetiser role to a ‘T’ – the gorgeous presentation as brightly striped fresh salmon sashimi crowned with a halo of green charred jalapeno and yellow petal piqued our visual appetites. Soft and juicy sashimi, crispy pastry and tangy jalapeno make for a tantalising trifecta.

I have this every single time I come to KOMA.

koma - scallop sashimi

KOMA’s Scallop Sashimi (S$38++) is another feast for the eyes. When it first arrived in its circular serving dish, it evoked memories of looking out into a garden from a round window. Atop the white scallops were infusions of green, purple and yellow reminiscent of a flowering vine.

The luscious Hokkaido scallops shone sweet and tender amongst the crunch of delicate greens and (whatever the yellow/brown clumps of spheres were).

koma - wagyu on plate

We were seemingly still in the garden with the Wagyu Chimichurri (SS$61++), but this time with meat – just look at that presentation!

The meat was A4 Kagoshima wagyu sirloin, glistening pink and hearty. It was cut and done perfectly for my taste, balancing melty tenderness through juicy umami and delicate fat. Chimichurri is perhaps the ultimate pairing sauce for this, and its spicy herbaceous nature made the wagyu shine, helped ably by the truffle and shallot mix.

koma - cocktails on table

My drink was the Shinrai (S$27++) of Orientalist vodka, St-Germain, cucumber and basil. Orientalist’s clean, fresh premium taste dominates this cocktail while the subtly sweet and floral notes from the St-Germain flow gently along. It was the perfect accompaniment to the Wagyu Chimichurri.

Connoisseurs will revel in KOMA’s selection of over 30 types of sake from across Japan as well as close to 400 types of wine.

koma - dessert platter

Time flew by, which fortunately meant that ‘twas the hour for dessert to be served. KOMA’s 6th Anniversary menu takes the 6 best of their sweet selection and presents them in miniature form as the Dessert Platter (S$34++). You get the Lemon Yuzu, Bonsai, Zen Garden, Taro, Cheesecake and Seasonal Fruits in just the right doses to be true to both your tastebuds and your BMI.

Final thoughts

It’s been 6 years of absolutely divine flavours at KOMA. It has been a couple of months since I was there last and their 6th Anniversary dishes were a wonderful reminder of why it remains one of the most highly acclaimed premium Japanese restaurants in Singapore.

One element that I recognised was that every item on KOMA’s menu is a feast for the eyes. Dining here isn’t just about indulgent flavours — it’s also a journey of anticipation, where each dish arrives with a sense of alluring curiosity. There is a chorus of exclamations as every platter is set down and you take the time to appreciate the artistry that occurs behind the kitchen doors.

That journey is best represented by KOMA’s special Anniversary à la carte menu. Whether you are a regular or have always wanted to go, experience it from 22 to 27 July.
