Breakfast for dinner is not a Western-exclusive concept! For generations, Indians have been having breakfast foods for dinner interchangeably. From thosai to idli to parotta, Indian breakfast food is top-tier and if I had a choice, I would be having it for every meal. However, it can get difficult to find Indian breakfast food that is as accessible as a mamak. Thus, when I heard about Magic Tiffin Truck serving Indian breakfast food till 2am, I was intrigued.
Located in Brickfields, this food truck is a 10-minute walk from NU Sentral and is located opposite the Sonali building.

Upon arriving at about 6pm, I noticed a small crowd forming around the food truck but the area was spacious with tables and chairs provided. What more, you even get a magnificent view of the KL skyscrapers as you enjoy your meal.
What I tried at Magic Tiffin Food Truck
After perusing their online menu, I was particularly excited to try out their Kizhi Parotta (RM8) and Kerala Puttu (RM3.50). Unfortunately, I was informed that those items would only be served after 8pm.
Dejected but still hopeful, I ordered their Magic Tiffin Platter (RM7), which comes with 1 thatte idli, 1 thosai, 1 methu vadai and a banana. Next, I got their Masala Thosai (RM5), Vegetarian Nasi Lemak (RM2.50) and some Narasus Coffee (RM3) with Masala Tea (RM2) to complete the meal.
The stall owner, aware of the crowd and rising popularity of his food truck, apologised profusely for the long waiting time (which wasn’t that long, to be honest) and his lack of manpower. Certain popular dishes like the masala thosai and nasi lemak will require you to wait for at least 10 to 15 minutes.
The first item we got was the Narasus coffee and masala tea which to my disappointment tasted extremely watered down. Typically when you’re drinking coffee or masala tea at an Indian restaurant, you’d expect to be hit with a strong gut-wrenching, face-slapping coffee and spices which were both missing there.
Next, I got certain elements of the Magic Tiffin Platter, the idli, vadai and banana. These items were served with sambar and chutney. Now, let me tell you that this idli was one of the softest idlis I have ever tasted in my life (sorry Mum!). Paired with the sambar and spicy mint chutney, these soft idlis were two dollops of rice cakes I wouldn’t mind being buried with. The vadai on the other hand was pretty meh and didn’t retain any of its supposed crispiness on the outer layer.
Next to arrive was the vegetarian nasi lemak boasting its tiny but reasonably priced package. For RM2.50, the portion was decent with enough sambal, rice, cucumber, nuts and a few pieces of mock meat. The nasi lemak was a bit on the spicier side which might not be for everyone, but overall the nasi lemak was not groundbreaking.
The last 2 items to arrive were the masala thosai and the normal thosai. The masala thosai was aesthetically pleasing owing to the chilli flakes and potato masala in the middle, giving it a spicy galaxy vibe. The taste did not disappoint, with the stir-fried potato complementing the crispy thosai, providing a mixture of spicy and savoury. The thosai had a perfect balance of crispiness and softness, and paired well with the sambar and chutney.
Final thoughts
The food at Magic Tiffin Food Truck is definitely worth a shot for Indian food lovers. The food was reasonably priced and tasted yummy despite the mad crowd. Certain menu items being available after a particular time was not ideal and something we hope the owners work on.
Magic Tiffin Truck offers something for everyone, whether it’s office workers seeking a satisfying meal after a long day or families looking for a delightful dining experience.
