The thing about fusion food is that it’s either a huge hit or a painful miss, but I’ve got a little feeling that the latest collaboration between The Feather Blade and RAPPU might just fall under the category of the former. MEZCLA, the duo’s latest partnership, is a special, limited-edition popup featuring Japanese-Mexican fare.

Guests can expect a hearty mix of flavours from both cuisines, with MEZCLA’s It’s Taco Time (S$120) all-encompassing set for two pax consisting of seven savoury tacos. They might be Mexican, but this menu integrates key Japanese elements and flavours. Think: crispy salmon skin tacos, with ikura cured salmon, edamame refritoscarnitas with pork jowl, topped ancho chile and pico de gallo, or even a crab taco stuffed with tempura soft shell, spiced mayo and tobiko and more.

It’s a long list of intriguing fusion flavours that puts an unexpected twist on what one would expect out of quintessential Mexican food. If I’m being honest, their dessert churro taco sounds the best—dusted with cinnamon sugar, filled with vanilla cream, Valrhona chocolate, and dusted lightly with gold flakes.

And with tacos come margaritas to wash it all down. Guests will be spoilt for choice with a variety of cocktail-style frozen Margaritas (S$13), which come in lime, kyoho, strawberry, pink guava, and peach flavours. It’s totally cool if you’re indecisive because I’m writing this and trying to work out which one I was most excited to try myself, and can’t seem to settle on one. You can opt for MEZCLA’s Flight of 3 (S$16) which will let you get the best of three worlds, in mini cocktails of 50ml each.

Grab a friend, order two of these, and you’ll be able to try out every flavour before you buy your favourite one in full-size. The MEZCLA popup is available on Tuesdays only, from 21 September to 26 October 2021. Reservations can be made on the MEZCLA site.
