If you like curry rice, you’re probably no stranger to New Scissor-cut Curry Rice in Geylang that closes at 3am daily. Having been around for over 30 years, this restaurant has garnered many long-time regulars. Unfortunately, they will be ceasing operations on 12 May 2025.

The closure was announced via their Facebook post a few weeks ago. They mentioned that it was “due to a number of challenges” but did not elaborate further.

In their post, they also thanked customers for their loyalty and support over the 3 decades they have been around.

For those who don’t know, scissor-cut curry rice is a dish where rice is lathered in curry and braised sauce, topped with a protein of your choice that is cut using scissors (hence its name). It is a messy and gloppy dish that is devilishly delicious.

Here at New Scissor-cut Curry Rice, the standard curry rice sets are priced at S$4.80 and come with a protein of choice (pork cutlet, braised pork or chicken wing), braised cabbage and one fried egg.

According to a regular who spoke with the owner, the restaurant’s business had dropped a whopping 50% since 2024. I was taken aback as I had presumed they were still as popular as they once were.

However, after a little more snooping on Google reviews and Facebook, I found several netizens commenting on the restaurant’s decline in quality. “Standard drop all the way from heaven straight to hell”, lamented one such customer.

Diluted curry, cold dishes and poor hygiene were the common consensus shared amongst these patrons. That is not to say they don’t have a following of loyal customers still, complimenting the thick gravy and praising its comfort value.

Now, I’ve never tried their curry rice, but one thing’s for sure: these mixed reviews are giving me whiplash.

If you’re curious about the mixed reviews — or just craving a hearty late-night supper —you’ve still got 2 weeks to check out New Scissor-cut Curry Rice before it closes!
