Cake fans, this one’s for you! The concept of on-the-go desserts was created by parfait and risotto specialist development company GAKU Japan. Okashi Gaku was developed to essentially sell packaged cakes via vending machines. ‘Okashi’ is a Japanese term referring to the appreciation of confectionery while ‘Gaku’ means to study or learn. On 16 Sep 2022, the brand landed multiple locations in Singapore.
The success of these canned cakes may be mostly attributed to its unique packaging. The clear cans effectively showcase those beautifully even layers of cake sponge and cream. This striking visual presentation hence successfully captures the attention of passers-by and encourages them to make a purchase.
Taste wise, many have raved about its soft pillow-like sponge coupled with its airy and light cream. Inevitably, the pairing results in addictive mouthfuls of the Japanese dessert creation.
Okashi Gaku will be launching 2 new Singapore-inspired flavours. Look out for these new flavour additions including Durian and Oreo Cookie to be stocked into Okashi Gaku’s popular vending machines soon. Although no mention of the taste and design have been mentioned, I imagine the latter will resemble the taste of an Oreo McFlurry!
While the updated price list has yet to be announced, I would expect similar costs to their current cakes. Their famed Strawberry Shortcake and Mango Passionfruit Fuwa are currently priced at S$11.80 and S$9.80 respectively. Note that only those using a chosen fruit jelly to create polka dots patterns within the can are representative of the ‘Fuwa’ series.
Those with unbearable midnight dessert cravings need not fret any longer. Multiple vending machine spots make it convenient to access these treats anytime of the day (or night!). Popular locations include Plaza Singapura, VivoCity and Bugis+ among others found across the country.
If you too have a weakness for cute desserts, stay tuned to their release date and run down to grab the first batch of these adorable canned cakes!
