The folks over at Old Chang Kee are always innovating new local-inspired flavours for their well-known puffs. Their recent Laksa Chicken’O impressed us greatly the last time. This time, however, they’ve come up with something sweet!

Joining the latest lineup of Old Chang Kee’s puffs is their all-new Kaya Butter Puff. You can get your hands on this new snack that’s now available at all Old Chang Kee outlets.

I’ll be honest, I was quite sceptical when I first heard of it. However, I was curious to find out how Old Chang Kee would incorporate my favourite breakfast item into their puffs.

The Kaya Butter Puff (S$1.40 for one, S$2.50 for two) uses a puff pastry that’s different from Old Chang Kee’s other puffs. The blisters of air pockets on the puff crust actually reminded us of McDonald’s ever-popular Apple Pie.

To our delight, the puff pastry was incredibly flaky. Biting into it made the layers of the pastry crumble spectacularly.

It also had the signature buttery goodness that Old Chang Kee’s puffs are popular for.

We were expecting a good amount of kaya to ooze out of the puff as we bit into it. However, we were disappointed that it wasn’t the case.

There was only a thin layer of kaya inside the puff, which was quite unfortunate.

Fortunately, though, the kaya had a delectably decadent flavour. Despite the small amount of it, it had a rich flavour which balanced out the buttery flavour of the crust.

Nothing screams a classic Singaporean breakfast to me like kaya toast. Just listening to the affectionate shouts of the uncles in the kopitiam never fails to get my stomach rumbling. With Old Chang Kee’s new creation, I can now get my kaya toast fix on the go!
