First dibs: Pasta Play — DIY pasta joint with toppings like Beef Rib Eye and Truffle Cream sauce

More and more food haunts seem to be popping up in the East, much to my Westie chagrin. Pasta Play is a new DIY pasta joint located at KINEX, near Paya Lebar. Upon taking the escalator to Basement 1, the shop is immediately visible.

As it was located near some seats, my companion and I quickly settled down and went to order.

To order at Pasta Play, you first choose a sauce out of four different choices, Aglio Olio (S$5.50), Tomato Sauce (S$6), Truffle Cream (S$6.50) and Basil Pesto (S$7). Next, you can choose between three different pasta types: Spaghetti, Linguine and Fusilli. Lastly, one has the option to add toppings ranging from S$1 to S$3.50.

Pasta Play’s Prawn Aglio Olio with Linguine and Soft-Poached Egg (S$9.50) smelled heavenly when it arrived. The garlic-y goodness immediately wafted into my nose, and I could not wait to dig in. Upon first bite, the wokhei from the pasta being tossed in a wok immediately hit me.

When the egg was tossed into the noodles, it coated the noodles evenly, giving the noodles a sheen and made each bite creamy. The noodles itself was well seasoned, with a strong pepper taste which was to my liking.

The prawns were on the smaller side, almost looking like shrimps. However they were bite-sized and generous— with every bite of the pasta you would get one prawn. The prawns were also fresh, giving a good bite.

Pasta Play’s Truffle Cream Fusilli (S$6.50) was delicious. The truffle taste was prominent and noticeable, and the sauce was creamy and milky with hints of mushroom. The fusilli noodles were well cooked, and were coated evenly with the sauce. There was also chilli present in this pasta, which gave the noodles a spicy kick that cut through the creaminess of the sauce.

Overall, Pasta Play has decent bowls of pasta that are slightly on the pricier side. I had wanted to try the Beef Rib Eye (S$3.50) topping, but due to the shop being in its opening stages, they had run out of it. If I do find myself in the area, I will definitely go down and get another bowl of Aglio Olio, this time with Beef Rib Eye.
