New in town: Penang Man — Authentic Penang laksa & hokkien mee in Bugis that dates back to 1965

One might ask, who would print out their face on a store header? Well, Penang Man, the newest inclusion to Albert Centre Market and Food Centre did, and it’s surely gaining traction as a marketing technique.

Displayed on their bright yellow store header is the owner’s face, as if calling out to invite customers to try out his food. It’s surely an eye catcher. Gladly enough, patrons have been reciprocating with their eagerness to try out the new stall.

From a Facebook post, a relative of the owner mentioned that it has always been a dream for her brother-in-law to open a stall that sold authentic Penang food. Talk about dreams translating into reality, as Penang Man opened in late Mar 2023.

You’re lucky to find out that they’re humbly located in Bugis. That means that once you’re done with shopping, you can head to Penang Man for a good bowl of Malaysian hokkien mee or laksa.

Over at the stall, you’ll get to choose between 3 options: Penang Assam Laksa (S$5.50), Penang Prawn Noodle (S$5/S$5.50) and Penang Braised Sauce Noodle (S$5).

Despite its recent opening, the Penang Assam Laksa has been a hot favourite within the public, as it’s often described as “heavenly“. A patron even mentioned that the broth is tasty and indulgent, tasting “even much better than” famous stalls. Clearly, Penang Man’s appearance acts as a growing competitor.

Furthermore, the dishes are priced rather affordably around the price of S$5 a bowl. I foresee this stall as a hot spot amongst locals in the near future.

More often than not, laksa dishes in Singapore are much milder than the authentic Penang laksa because of our low tolerance of spice. However, at Penang Man, they’ve adjusted the chilli paste to taste exactly like the dishes at Penang. How else can he call his stall Penang Man if the noodle dishes don’t taste like they’re from Penang?

Indefinitely, these noodles will pack a punch, so here’s a word of advice: Add a pinch of chilli before dumping the whole serving into your bowl!
