Al Jasra Restaurant in Kembangan, noted for its 24-hour prata buffet, has been temporarily closed for 2 weeks. This popular location, known for serving an array of 16 distinct prata kinds for only $7.90 per person, suffered this setback when a regular inspection by the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) uncovered hygienic violations. The SFA website states that the stall has 2 counts of failure to keep the premises free of infestation.

The suspension is part of the agency’s strong enforcement policies to protect food safety and public health. This news comes amidst the closure of the TikTok food poisoning incident where 169 people were treated with gastroenteritis.

The suspension, which takes effect on 21 August 2024, serves as a stark reminder of the need to uphold good hygiene standards, particularly in 24-hour restaurants. While I am sure patrons of Al Jasra will express displeasure with the closure, many might remain confident that the restaurant will take the necessary steps to address the issues and return shortly. The restaurant has long been a favourite among East Coast inhabitants, especially those who like to eat late at night or early in the morning.

This incident emphasises the importance of maintaining constant monitoring of food safety, especially in venues with significant foot traffic and extended hours. The SFA has made it clear that subsequent offences may result in more severe sanctions, such as longer suspensions or even permanent closure.

As Al Jasra strives to complete the regulatory standards for reopening, diners will have to wait to once again enjoy their favourite pratas at this legendary restaurant.
