Quick Summary

Rahmath Cheese Prata in central Toa Payoh specialises in cheese-infused flatbreads, offering variations such as Cheese Prata with Egg, Mushrooms & Cheese, and a Mini Mutton Murtabak, alongside plain, egg, and onion options. Popular with locals and morning visitors, the stall balances crispy, doughy textures with modestly flavoured fillings, making it suitable for those seeking straightforward, homestyle prata without heavy or overly complex toppings.

As their name suggests, Rahmath Cheese Prata serves an assortment of cheese flavoured combinations with their grilled flatbread. Located in central Toa Payoh, this family business has been touted as one of the best prata joints in the vicinity.

I chanced upon them during my morning walk and saw a snaking queue leading up to their storefront. Amongst all the other hawker stalls in the market, none had queues comparable to Rahmath Cheese Prata.

The team was extremely fast despite the hot weather and did not seem intimidated by the queue at all. This must be a daily sight for them, I convinced myself.

What I tried at Rahmath Cheese Prata

rahmath cheese prata - plain prata

I started off with their Plain Prata (S$2.40 for 2 pieces). While many of my friends enjoy piling on ingredients to their prata, I often enjoy mine plain. Hence, it’s no surprise that I enjoyed these super crispy and doughy fried foods.

rahmath cheese prata - egg prata

This dish is easily jazzed up with the addition of eggs and onions. Hence, I ordered Egg Prata (S$2) and Onion Prata (S$1.50). The former was presented as a rectangle, filled with an egg. It was surprisingly fluffy from the eggs which were thoroughly cooked.

The Onion Prata was stuffed with a handful of chopped onions. Flavour wise, the onions were not pungent but rather sweet and extremely crunchy. I loved how addictive the crunch was although I must admit that adding an egg would have balanced out its sharp flavour.

I did not get to try the Egg & Onion Prata (S$2.50), which I noticed many customers placing orders for. Oh well, I just have to make another trip down!

Now back to the Egg Prata, it was a simple creation which I found was most fitting to pair with the accompanying curries. Auntie gave me both the curries available for the day — Mutton and Fish.

I am usually an avid fan of mutton curry. When given the option to choose between chicken, mutton or fish, it was a no-brainer for me. However, the Mutton Curry served here lacks the level of gaminess I was hoping for.

While the curry had an impeccable consistency, I couldn’t help but desire a bit more meatiness. This could be due to the fact that no chunks of meat were included in the stewing curry pot; it was purely gravy.

After much anticipation, I then tried their Cheese Prata (S$2.50). There were online reviews suggesting that other varieties  of cheese were used rather than the usual sliced cheese. I was, however, rather perplexed when Uncle swiftly added the latter to the flipped dough.

I looked up at the signboard and realised that I was mistaken.

Truth be told, I was not expecting much flavour from a single slice of cheese in their Cheese Prata construction. In fact, I was struggling to locate the cheese component in the prata during picture-taking.

All it took was one bite to melt away all my doubts. Although not stringy, the cheese added a sharp saltiness to the fried dough. There were also gooey cheese pockets throughout the prata which I adored.

I decided to try out a couple of other cheese variations as well — Cheese Prata with Egg (S$3.50) and Prata with Mushrooms & Cheese (S$3.50).

Fluffy meets savoury in the Cheese Prata with Egg. It reminded me of the scrambled eggs with cheese that I often eat for breakfast. I was so amazed at how well the prata’s crispiness held up even after the dish was left untouched for a while.

rahmath cheese prata - mushroom prata

Previously, I would consider the Prata with Mushrooms & Cheese an unorthodox creation that I’d rather steer away from. However, I welcomed its creativity as I was feeling adventurous and I’m glad to report that I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Button mushrooms were diced and strewn across the prata. The result was almost like the mushroom cheese toast you get at local bakeries.

I saved the Mini Mutton Murtabak (S$5) for last (or at least under the savoury category). This item is usually my go-to prata order and I have made it my personal goal to taste every murtabak I set my eyes on.

Encased within the crunchy exterior, a thick layer of eggs sets the base for minced mutton and chopped onions. There was nothing to fault in this meaty and hefty flatbread. All that was missing was a slice of cheese.

rahmath cheese prata - fish curry dip

This may be unusual for some, but I loved dipping my Mutton Murtabak into the Fish Curry. It had a tangy element that was almost refreshing and light compared to the greasy prata. I also appreciated how well the bread efficiently soaked up the curry.

rahmath cheese prata - chocolate prata

To end my visit on a sweet note, the last item I purchased was none other than Chocolate Prata (S$2.50). Chocolate syrup was drizzled onto the sheet of prata before it was wrapped and fried. The dessert construction was not the most oosy and chocolatey, but it certainly satisfied my sugar cravings for the day.

Final thoughts

rahmath cheese prata - prata making

In general, I usually drown my carbohydrates with curry or gravy. On this occasion, however, I didn’t find the need to do so for the creative cheese pratas. There are other options available for those looking for an Insta-worthy cheese pull or prata stuffed with a ton of ingredients.

Nonetheless, simplicity is well-maintained here, and it’s clear that the Toa Payoh residents appreciate and support this approach as well. Head down to give these homestyle pratas a shot whenever you’re in the area!
