Tampines Round Market & Food Centre has lost a hawker from an iconic stall. Rajarani Thosai’s beloved stall owner, R Malawathi, has passed away peacefully at the age of 61.

The news was shared by a member of the Can Eat! SG Facebook Group on 9 Jun 2026, and the comments section was flooded with condolences from customers.
Mdm Malawathi helmed Rajarani Thosai for over 20 years, and her legacy dates back to when her children were toddlers. Her friendly demeanour and quality thosai made her stall a popular breakfast spot in Tampines, drawing long queues daily.

Rajarani Thosai is not only well-received among Tampines residents but also patronised by former President Halimah Yacob and Minister for Social and Family Development Masagos Zulkifli.
In recent years, one of Mdm Malawathi’s sons joined her in running the hawker stall. This joint effort, along with consistent food quality, helped her stall rise to fame with a Michelin recognition in 2025.

When we visited Rajarani Thosai a few weeks ago, we explored different options on the menu. The Masala Egg Onion Thosai (S$5) was well-balanced with a chewy texture from the egg and potato, as well as a satisfying crunch from the onion.
Their Cereal Thosai (S$3.50) is also worth a try, with the sweet and crispy cereal adding an interesting twist to the savoury thosai crepe. The stall also serves appam in multiple flavours. We tried the Coconut Appam (S$2), which has a slight crisp on its edges and a spongy texture on the inside.

Mdm Malawathi’s wake was held from 6 to 7 Jun, and her cremation took place on 7 Jun. Rajarani Thosai is temporarily closed till 17 Jun, and is set to resume operations on 18 Jun.
Our deepest condolences to Mdm Malawathi’s family, friends and all who grieve her passing. May she rest in peace.
